Why would Ian and Lena breaking up automatically exclude them from going? They are still friends with rest of the group, including the person who has actually invited them.

Also, variables affecting just text and little else is pretty common thing in ORS (and in general). It still makes game reactive to player's action, just not every little thing is earth-shattering event.
