When Ian and Lena talk in the park they only agree to "experiment together". It's not open relationship at that point, and "experimenting together" is clear enough that it doesn't involve fucking other people without your partner present. People simply read too much into the name of variable used to encode that state.

It is then potentially and explicitly redefined in Ch.12 as actual open relationship, if Ian either agrees to Lena's suggestion, or makes such request himself.
That still seems pretty vague to me, as it could be interpreted literally, 'only have new sex while both of us are present' (which Lena almost certainly breaks to be able to offer up Louise), or figuratively, 'you can experiment, but we are together, ie. primary partners.' Which is what it sounds like at the time, and if it isn't supposed to be that, 1-2 extra lines to talk about boundaries would have been nice. Because if it is only 'new sex while we are both present' they never actually say examples or how that may come around. Swingers club? Not mentioned. Threesomes? Comes up much later than that conversation.

My point is, it's such an easy fix, why wouldn't you make it clearer? Unless the point is that they have bad communication and don't set it up well, inviting more pain on themselves, but the game doesn't narrate it that way.

Every time someone else starts to refer to them as an exclusive couple, they always respond with "no, it's not like that", indicating they are not. So any excuse which states they are, it just bullshit.

Anyhow, I'll probably get through this playthrough as fast as possible and move on to something else as this game is getting beyond annoying.

I highly doubt is going to be 20 through,it will take many more years of development.
Time will tell i guess...
In the first years of development, we'd get 2~3 chapters per year, nowadays we're down to 2~3 chapter updates per year. If the game does indeed go on to have 20 chapters (unlikely) with this current development pace, we'll only be seeing the final, completed version in the late 2020s.

So yeah either Eva locks in with her development process or reduces the amount of chapters, otherwise we'll only be having discussions about the full product during the 2032 Australia Olympics.

I'm still a fan. Shame it's about 1-1.5 chapters a year.

Actually just went from a park open relationship, had Ian hook up with Cindy and Allison (first time, at her folks place), decide he wants it all, had Lena fuck Jack (no other 'cheating'), then decide to commit to the relationship, then Ian called for an open relationship without ever being caught (just kissed Cindy at first).

The pathing gets super convoluted and weird at this stage though. I think because Lena sat on Ian's face once, that opens up the cuck path? Not super cuck, but more feet stuff and teasing happens for some reason. But he's still dominant to her, so I guess it's Schrodinger's Dom.

Interestingly enough, Lena doesn't take the opportunity to talk to John, even after the relationship is open, but will fuck the hell out of Emma (one that's kinda sorta with Perry).

Yeah.
I think the only reason she backtracked about the 16 chapters is because the patreons cried about it:KEK:
I think is going to be 16-18 chapters and 18 is even a stretch...

If you think this sounded vague because you can torture out a different "figurative" meaning if you pretend you don't know what words mean and just shuffle them around to produce something completely different, then i don't know what to tell you. You do you, i guess?

And yes, Lena does break that deal if she has what's effectively affair with Louise. In fact, she explicitly wonders about whether that's breaking the deal and if she's cheating (but ultimately concludes that hopefully not, because "its with a girl so it doesn't count". Which is porn bullshit, but that's another story)

Can you provide any example when this happens? I don't really remember Lena or Ian who get in relationship to claim they aren't, or anyone really talking about exclusivity of their pairing.

You want Ian, Lena and Holly in a throuple? The easiest way to do so is have the three of them not sleep with anybody else.
They can't even sleep with each other :HideThePain: (at least Ian and Holly if you want the throuple)

The writing is good but some decisions suck, and their logic is... subjective to the dev. I guess it's also to avoid too many intertwined paths

They can. Lena may break up with Ian if he goes for Holly, but if she herself makes moves on Holly, they may later rejoin.

To remind you of what i originally stated:

Yuppers! I wasn't going to search, as that would be A LOT to search through, but I tried some random chapters, searching through the source code then, once I narrowed down the chapter, I searched my saved games for a spot close to that, and knowing the line number in the code to search for and using my own mod which shows me the line number, I was, thankfully, able to quickly track down the scene where Ian says that (and Lena has said similar, but I am not searching for that right now)...

Thank you very much for looking it up. But having seen it, i kind of have bad news...

i've looked that scene in the script, and this is how this particular text is used:
Python:
    elif ian_lena_dating:
h "So, about you and Lena..."
h "Is it correct to call you a couple?"
i "What? No, it's not like that..."
        i "I mean, we're dating, but we're not a couple. We're just..."
you get this one only when Lena and Ian are friends with benefits, i.e. they indeed aren't a couple. When Lena and Ian are in committed relationship, this scene plays as follows:
Python:
    if ian_lena_couple:
h "So... Lena told me about you two..."
        i "She did?"
h "Yeah... I'm happy for you. I think you make for a great couple..."
i "Thanks, Holly. We agreed to take things step by step, though..."
i "I guess not much has changed between Lena and me. I just wanted to be open about my feelings for her."
In other words, on the path where Lena/Ian are an actual couple there's no denial that they're indeed one. Consequently, the expectation to only "experiment together" in such arrangement isn't in any way bullshit, like you originally claimed. On the couple route both Ian and Lena expect their partner to be faithful and don't sleep with other people without getting them also involved. The game supports this approach on mechanics level, tracking instances of sleeping around as cheating, which can eventually cause the relationship to fall apart.

Speaking of Emma, is there any other on ramp for her, other than the night at Blazer that Alison is also at?
