MJ suffered from vitiligo and lupus (discoloration of the skin with white patches) . So to cover it up and balance out the skin colour variation, he used make ups and skin whitening treatments. He was not trying to change his race.

He had a skin problem which caused his skin to turn white in blotches, I forget what it is called, but rather than have ugly blotched skin, he started treating his skin to make it all evenly white.
