They're not going to roll out the new payment scheme...

Guess the backlash was too much. What a poorly thought out plan, jeez. I wonder if all the $1 and other patrons will flock back to the projects, otherwise Patreon did a lot of unnecessary damage. The blog also mentions that the new system will be revised and implemented in a different form at a later date, when the community has had its say.
Yeah, the damage is done, and it won't be undone right away as there's still an uncertainty that Patreon has created with this series of decisions regarding using them as a means to conduct/support businesses. Some creators might get back the lost patrons, others are likely done with Patreon altogether and moved on to something else.

We'd still need to see what they do from now on, as they do still plan on pursuing some form of increase in charges, just not the way they first thought.

As consumer, we already at risk giving our money to support someone. This invest can lead to success, failure or abandoned. Now, as we already risk our money, Patreon charge plus for our 'Bet'. This is an idiotic move by them.

Seems they heard the complains and withdrawing the new fees plan:
And yet, they don't seem to give a shit about our complaints about the (relatively) recent content standards change.

I don't mean to be an asshole about this one, but the fee change was the straw that broke the camel's back for me, not the reason I was pissed in the first place. Porn games having to hide their content, overtly mislead their publishing platform, and re-write their scripts to adhere to the new anti-porn sentiment on Patreon is still bullshit. It's basic decency to fix that awful pricing change (which they clearly, if you read their blog post, plan to implement in some new way later), but it's not enough to win back my support.

Sorry to the creators out there trying to do good stuff. The current situation sucks and I'm glad you're out there doing what you love. But for me at least, this isn't the only change that Patreon needs to roll back to regain my trust. Find a better platform that doesn't curtail your creative freedom as hard and I might be onboard, but for right now my I'm sticking to my guns and not resubbing to any projects on Patreon so long as it continues to be anti-porn.

here's a post from patreon lame excuse for thare Sorry statement

Creators and Patrons,
December 2017

We’ve heard you loud and clear. We’re not going to rollout the changes to our payments system that . We still have to fix the problems that those changes addressed, but we’re going to fix them in a different way, and we’re going to work with you to come up with the specifics, as we should have done the first time around. Many of you lost patrons, and you lost income. No apology will make up for that, but nevertheless, I’m sorry. It is our core belief that you should own the relationships with your fans. These are your businesses, and they are your fans.

I’ve spent hours and hours on the phone with creators, and so has the Patreon team. Your feedback has been crystal clear:

  • The new payments system disproportionately impacted $1 – $2 patrons. We have to build a better system for them.
  • Aggregation is highly-valued, and we underestimated that.
  • Fundamentally, creators should own the business decisions with their fans, not Patreon. We overstepped our bounds and injected ourselves into that relationship, against our core belief as a business.
We recognize that we need to be better at involving you more deeply and earlier in these kinds of decisions and product changes. Additionally, we need to give you a more flexible product and platform to allow you to own the way you run your memberships.

I know it will take a long time for us to earn back your trust. But we are utterly devoted to your success and to getting you sustainable, reliable income for being a creator. We will work harder than ever to build you tools, functionality, and income, and our team won’t rest until Patreon is making that happen.

If you haven’t sent us a note yet, or if you don’t see your concerns listed above, please leave us your feedback .

Thanks for continuing to create. We are nothing without you, and we know that.

Personally I feel its a good thing.
Sure we paid for the fees now - but the content creators get an more accurate share.
I don't mind paying a bit more as it is a - small effect per individual - but huge - when it comes to content creators!!
All in all - think this is only a positive step in the right direction.
This is a terrible thing. Why? Taxes. With the creator paying the fees to patreon, those fees become a business expense and can be claimed on taxes as an expense. With the fees being transferred to us that tax expense is lost resulting in higher taxes being paid at the end of the year by the creator.

Of course, this would require the creator to have actually incorporated into a business, which may not be the case. But if "XXX studios" is listed, that should have some paperwork to back it up. Without that, the creator has left themselves open to lawsuit that can not only take their business assets, but their home and cars and other personal things. Don't know if that would actually happen here, but patreon doesn't only serve creators of porn games.

I'm not sure if I'm misreading this, but payment processing fees are tax deductible in the US.

That's exactly the point. Patreon passed those fees onto the consumer, who cannot deduct them. If left on the vendor, they can claim the deduction. That's what makes it bad.

I'm still confused. Patreon gives me a breakdown. 5% goes to patreon as a fee, then another category is listed as my payment processing expense. Why do you think that I can't deduct this figure?

You can deduct those, but the fees that the consumer is paying directly, which you used to pay, you cannot. If your business is incorporated, then all expenses come off the top of income and you only pay taxes on what remains. So you'll be paying taxes on a higher amount and have smaller deductions. Which results in paying more taxes. It might seem like a small change but there's a difference.
