Locking content behind a paywall is the absolutely best way possible to get people to not play your game.
You will never successfully force people to pay to play your game, but you can successfully stop them from playing it.

Be happy with your subscribers, release the game early to them, involve them in polls. And remember, the people who play your game for free, may well become subscribers in the future.

But NOT if you do things like this patreon lock code.

Hi, thanks for the constructive feedback.

Honestly, I had some doubts when adding this lock feature, but after a lot of thought, I went for it - let me try to explain my reasoning.

When I looked at the Patreon tiers, I wanted to offer something extra to followers for their contribution. So, I decided to include an additional chapter exclusively for Patreon, beyond early access and the polls you mentioned, while keeping the main game fully accessible without any Patreon requirement!

But maybe I should’ve thought of something that wouldn’t come across as restrictive or forced? Do you think a separate Patreon version with expanded content (unmentioned in the main release) might be a better approach?

This is actually my first game available to the public and on Patreon, so feedback like yours really helps!

Thanks again, and I’d be glad to keep the discussion going!

Hi mate, the problem is, your work will always escape someone will always share it, so you have to build that into your calculus. Given that you cant stop this, and could hurt your games subscriber growth if you do try to do it, take a leaf out of "A wife's phone" have a basic core story to tell, and then let your subscribers have a hand in some way in telling the story

do polls for who we see this update, what route gets updated etc, but dont let it totally dominate your own story. subs get really happy when they feel they are "directing the movie" and many are happy to pay to do it.

it also really increases your interaction with subscribers and helps build a "family feeling"

Anywaays, I appreciate you responding positively, and wish you good luck for the future

I'm a huge fan of these phone games. Netorase Phone is probably one of my favorite games on this site. I enjoyed what I have seen of this game as well. That being said, the paywall really reduced a lot of the enjoyment. I agree with the posters above. Whatever positives you generate will be lessened by using it. Just my 2 cents though. Good luck with your game! Like I said, I enjoyed the parts I could see.

Would you consider adding a faster modality?
The game looks nice and interesting, sadly I don't have the patience to wait seconds for every line.
Hey, thanks for the kind words about my work - it really means a lot and gives me the motivation to keep going!

As for making the chat run faster, a lot of people here have mentioned it too, and I’ve spent practically the whole day:coffee: today rewriting my messaging engine to make it happen for you guys! I’m really sorry I didn’t implement this from the start and that it caused any inconvenience!!!

ok the game is fine as a start tho it needs some improvement stuff like
  1. the ability to save and load progress specifically since the game premise offers multiple paths and choices
  2. the ability to change the mc name
  3. the ability to speed up the text msgs like a slider u can tweak in the setting depending on the person's ideals some prefer instant msgs some prefer slightly faster ones and others prolonged ones (I don't judge :p)
  4. adding some music and vfx in the background would also be immersive
  5. a fix for the jumping in stories for instance the daughter's friend or the wife when she msg the MC and finishes the first day it immediately jumps/continues on the next day, a sort of like transition where the mc shuts the phone down or go to sleep then continue on the conversation would be much better, this kind of exist with the lawyer but no so much with other characters
  6. a hint mechanism would be neat like x choice would starts x branch so that players know what they are committing to would be a neat touch
that;s all I was able to think of rn the game is promising ....wishing u best of luck (y)

pay walled content is fine, as long as you don't spam ads about it in the public version
things like a disabled choice with "(patrons only)" also feels terrible to me

unless if the game is a terrific amazing master piece then i guess you can get away with those stuff

Hey Killer94, thanks for the kind words and for such a detailed list of suggestions - I’m really impressed!

I like your idea of a slider to control the message speed. Right now, I’m working on making messages appear instantly with a space bar press, but after that, I’ll definitely think about adding a slider!

As for name-changing, saving, and sound options - it looks like we’re on the same page there. I’m planning to tackle those as soon as I can!

I also think it would be a great idea to create a roadmap with all the upcoming improvements so everyone can see what’s planned for the game and share their ideas too!

As far as my knowledge goes, studies always showed that pirating content never hindered any sales. Nor is it proven that pirating would promote something either, don't get me wrong. But since the relationship between pirating and sales is not relevent to consider, i don't see why you find it relevent to waste anything over it.

I mean, yeah that's not so hard to lock some content behind a code, but i think it goes to the extent of thinking you should as you say "offer something extra for your higher tier(patrons)". Well, i can only talk for myself, but i would rather have more of the thing am actualy paying for than something on the side.
And well, in your case, despite what you say, it appears as main content anyway.

I don't mind a bit of incentive to pay, its only that putting that kind of restrain so early in development before even proving yourself trustworthy neither as a story writter nor as a steady delivering dev, that's a bit harsh. And i think it does the very opposite of what you're trying to achieve there.

Also, the amount people are paying for your game isn't even corelated to the investment these people actually feel for your game. Depending on contry, age, job, well, the price is actualy different for every one. But if you want your patreon tier to be corelated to the actual interest people have in your game, offer more influence over the game to them the more they are paying. Like as you said participating in polls, have their own previews, being beta readers, beta testers.

In the end, there's no path to follow, so it's okay to experiment. Just don't forget that like it or not, pirating will always be the main access to your game, so don't be a party boomer, or you'll just be put aside :sneaky:

And i'd like to say i liked your game but here is the thing, there's not enough yet to be worthy of note. UI and features seems like work in progress, there's not much happening in the story yet. Even the IA renders, i mean, mother daughter and friend look too much alike. And you could work the staging a bit more. You have to proove us your game is worth the money man :ROFLMAO:

Well keep up the good work, i'll be checking it out anyways(y)
