I think it's something else. Renpy is an open source, and the assets used are all available and copyable with a little effort; I know because he told me about some of them, but the story is only in SadPeppers' head.

This. My guess is he's going to work away until completion and the game will get a full release on Steam. He just won't be obligated to keep the hectic pacing a Patreon subscription often somewhat demands. So it might be a while.

Yeah he did ^^ Time will tell I guess. It could be that not much progress has been made since then. Since he's not on the time crunch of Patreon any more, if he decides to continue to chip away at PE2, maybe we won't be getting the game for a couple years. We'll just have to wait and see what the dev says.
