Kinda apocalypse in the online art world.
PIXIV, most important japanese site for sharing drawings and providing a way to sustain/sell art, just banned incest, bestiality, rape and guro content. This is probably mostly due to western card companies being against it (EGS guidelines), same thing that happened with R18 basically.
Also western companies against degeneracy? lmao

The end of an era. It never stops getting worse.

Literally Twitter is the only safe heaven for Japanese porn now?

From the announcement this will only affect their paysites, so you can still post lolis on the main site, just not put them behind a paywall.

Honestly, all of this shit is happening because people aren't taking a stand and fighting back against payment processor bullshit. People should be protesting this bullshit on social media and complaining to pixiv, but no, they do nothing while their freedoms are slowly being eaten alive. It's bullshit. More and more I have more respect for Subscribestar for not bowing to this stupidity.

The payment processor dictatorship is a major issue that needs to be addressed.

They aren't against degeneracy, they are against having their own ass sent to jail.

Instead of blaming the sole payment processors (not that they are innocent, just not fully responsible), have some words with the woke generation. It's them who want to account as responsible anyone who participate in a transaction they are against.
Until more or less the last decade, intermediaries (whatever payment processors, postal companies, ISP, etc) were seen as responsible only if they knowingly served as part of a criminal act. But more and more peoples are now trying to fry their asses for everything they dislike. And, like I said, those intermediaries don't really want to have their ass fried for something they haven't done and have no control over. Therefore, they ensure that it simply can't happen.

This is definitely a major blow, and I can't believe they even bowed down to the demands of blanket bans on guro, incest, or non-con.

Pixiv has actually been exploding in popularity with Western erotic artists who are pissed off by the vague and annoying rules of sites like DeviantArt and Patreon, with just the one simple rule of adding mosaics... every day, I kept seeing more and more of them start a Fanbox or join Pixiv. So unfortunately, it was only a matter of time before the credit card companies cast their eye toward it; they already targeted Skeb since lots of Westerners were commissioning the Japanese artists on there. Anti-porn journalists (who are the bogeyman to these credit card companies) don't want a Japanese site to become a refuge for independent artists; it would be bad for them if norms were changed and Western sites were made to look prudish by comparison.

What's at least good is that Japan isn't taking this completely lying down. They know it's only foreigners who are forcing this on them. Sites like Skeb are looking into alternative payment options. DMM already gave the credit card monopoly the finger, and DLsite has only accepted a few very specific demands and resisted most (well, DLsite is still far from what it used to be). And we still have a full month before these changes even take effect, so the story is far from over.

I never use pixiv but i have an account for some reason. I went into the settings and noticed something even more significant: AI-generated work which you cannot completely opt out of. I think i'll continue to not use pixiv.
What that means is that people don't properly tag all of the AI-generated works, so it isn't all filtered out. There is also a gray area of AI-assisted art, like coloring sketches or redrawing parts. Pixiv obviously has no reason in forcing people to still see random mediocre AI art if they don't want to see it.

Until they eventually nuke that too. The move to alternate sites won't solve anything as they'll be the next target, we need a way around mastercard/visa. crypto could be that but the big adopters keep treating it like the stock market.

If you read their current terms - this actually does nothing to change their current policies, but rather clarifies what is not allowed. In fact, regarding their recent investigation of activities by pixiv users, "Some were found to violate the pixiv Terms of Use, Article 14 "Prohibited Conduct", Item 26."

This means there isn't a change coming - but a clarification of the current TOU. Just because few people got caught doing something against current TOU in the past doesn't mean it was okay to do so on that site. It means they weren't caught. Now that more are being caught - pixiv is clarifying for users to know what's not allowed.

: When using the Services, User must not engage in the conduct set forth in the following items... Conduct that is linked to or likely to be linked to fraud or other criminal behavior
Criminal behavior is legally understood as where a person resides. In many countries, what is soon to be clarified in their terms is considered criminal behavior to create, produce, and share. The company wants to stay in business as long as possible, and therefore chooses to limit their legal liability in order to do that business.
: Using the Services to display, sell, purchase, register, or engage in other transactions involving the products set forth below...
4. Products that contain images or other data corresponding to obscenity
This is the Article the announcement points to and, as you can see, they are now being more clear about what "obscenity" means with regard to their TOU. What pixiv considers obscene includes, but is not limited to:
  • Sexual exploitation of a minor
  • Incest
  • Bestiality
  • Rape (or any other non-consensual sexual behavior)
  • Non-consensual mutilation of a person or body part
Again, nothing has really changed regarding the TOU - it's just people got away with it for so long because of lack of proper enforcement (either due to staffing issues or lack of motivation or other reasons).

Count Morado "Nothing has really changed" is a bizarre way to frame this. Pixiv announced that they're now planning to hide people's creative content and suspend their accounts where they didn't before, specifically because the credit card companies threatened them into doing so. This is an irregular event which will massively change the site and affect the income of many creators. You imply that this is all casual for Pixiv and that they didn't do it before because they just couldn't be bothered, but you're way off. There's no self-respecting Japanese site for creators that treats being forced into self-censorship by foreign companies as a non-event.

Thanks for the clarification. I still won't use pixiv because i wasn't using it already, but i edited my post so as to not spread confusion among anyone else.

I am saying the Terms of Use (TOU) has not changed - outside of clarifying what some of their articles mean.

I also stipulated just because people got away with breaking TOU previously doesn't mean they were correct in using pixiv in the way they were. This directly goes goes to your comment "where they didn't before." Yes, pixiv was more lax in enforcing their own TOU. They are telling people they are going to be more proactive in their enforcement of their own TOU.

That isn't changing the TOU - but they are holding themselves more accountable to enforce it. There is nothing in their announcement which talks about the theory that the credit card companies are threatening them to do so. This has been their TOU - they just haven't been doing their job well in making sure people follow the TOU.

You are clearly reading into the announcement something you want to read into it.

They have found people in violation of the TOU and clearly stated why they were in violation. Pixiv, in their announcement, is reminding people of the TOU and how they can stay in compliance with the TOU. Because people either mistakenly - or intentionally - did not know they were in violation.

Pixiv could have said "fuck you all, you sick perverts who are doing x, y, z - we're coming for you because you're in violation of our current TOU" and they would have every legal right to because there are accounts which are in violation of the TOU.

They did not say that. They said - hey, some of you are in violation and it's probably because the TOU isn't clear enough for you. So, it's going to get an update to the language to clarify what's you can't do and you have 1 month before greater enforcement of the TOU begins.

maybe pixiv is tracking down real cp distribution because some japanese user pointed out about the current situation regarding TOS in under the guise of "novel ai artists"

The controversy stems from ai generated content and the fact that people were selling works of ai generated images from real cp,from the responses Japanese creators are getting from the staff it seems like for the most part only ultra realistic content will be banned from being sold with all art work being allowed to be posted on the main site only for free.

I couldn't give any less of a damn because this still translates to "no R18 of -18 characters/incest/bestially/guro" unless someone wants to prove they're targeting AI cp spam and not the bog standard loli incest mini doujin.

just like people hopped off of tumblr or patreon, people will hopp off of pixiv
there will always be an alternative. subscribestar in this example
they are already at odds with credit card companies, so they don't care.
Now what the rest of us need to do is ditch these credit card companies that keep doing this. Visa & Mastercard in this case.
