I don't hate the discord idea but moderating something like that kinda scares me, It's definitely something I want to do in the future but I need to think about how I'm going to structure it and stuff and I'm not super active on discord in general so stuff could happen while I'm offline and I wouldn't know until I open it again, I am thinking of opening one once the first version is out, but idk, we'll need to see.
Discord servers are useful to create a community and have a more direct communication but yes, they can be a challenge to moderate (I was and still am a moderator, some calm and other pure chaos).
Usually you need trusty moderators to help you and a good set of rules.
But aside from that it can be both a blessing and even a curse (with certain fandoms being extremely toxic).
But don’t worry on that yet.
The starters are gonna be Sprigatito, Fennekin and Popplio, all three evolve into pretty popular "Waifu-mon" and the theme doesn't really go any deeper than that. I'm still considering weather I add poke-phelia sex scenes in game, it at least won't be in the first build if it does come, but for now it's going to be people focused. in the first town (Lyra Town) You can catch Deerling (Normal/Grass), Litleo (Normal/Fire), and Bidoof(Normal/Water) and Lillipup (Normal). Its so the player can fairly quickly get a Fire, water, grass trio pretty quickly on their team if they want, but isn't anything super OP early game, Lillipup is also there who's a very reliable mon but again not going to change the world. Besides that I don't have the other routes super planned out, I have a couple ideas like a wetland route to the south of Lyra and a more normal forest to the west so those are good starting points I can work with.
Waifu mons!
There is a game on this site called pokemon syntax which mostly focuses on poke-philia.
But that can be a late end game fetish, since you already have 5 LIs on the plate and juggling with love interests it can be challenging.

Simple but effective pokemons that you can catch in the wild, if I can make a suggestion a couple ot more of Pokémon fangames (Reborn, Rejuvenation et cetera) hid special pokemons in sidequest or even let the players choose the reward between items and pokemons.

Routes are especially hard to develop, since they can be a linear street of grass with a dozen trainers or mazes with shortcuts and interconnections to new places, dungeons, spots of interest (Like houses, teachers and shops) and secret paths that require MHs.
The first three generations are masters at that, great source of inspiration.
While the fifth generation is better at creating linear routes with many things to do with in.

For sure, I personally have always loved the pre 3ds era way of doing routes, gen 5 especially, though the entire game was very linear, it didn't feel like exploration was lost since they expanded the routes alot to explore and find stuff in them, especially with hm's you could go back to old routes to find secrets, and i've been reviewing a couple of the earlier pokemon games' routes for inspiration, its been pretty fun making them. I don't think my routes will be game changing or anything, not that they're bad, i think they're pretty good, but I think I'll be able to learn from them and make something even better in future updates. There is also theming which I've been kinda struggling with, I think there's a micro story you can tell with a routes design, then there's also tryna make sure I put the right pokemon in the tall grass. Putting special or more unique pokemon behind side quests definitely sounds like a good idea.

Exactly it had a marvelous charm that the 3d era butchered with inconsistent exploration and lack of content. Pokemon white and black and its sequels are linear but they are packed with content in every city, in every route there is somethin to do remotely interesting, and it even adds a metroidvania aspect of returning in a place you already been with new HMs to explore what was left unexplored as you said.

And you have the best attitude for this kind of developing, creating is an evolutionary task, you get better and understand more and more each aspect of gameplay while you sew it.

Indeed you can narrate a story without writing a single line of dialogue just throughout visual representation, although dialogues from trainers and NPCs are always welcomed, I hate when RPGs fill npcs’mouths with filler dialogue.
Most egregious example was this indie game I was 100% called Monster sanctuary, fun gameplay but a crime against writing in storytelling.
That aside, great examples of visual micro stories routes are from gen 3; such as 111, 112 and 113 which all slowly build up a volcanic ecosystem. Route 113 with its falling cinders that you can interact with and trainers that hide in said wasteland has this great looming sense of aridity.
Or Eterna forest from gen 4 (Which is not a route but still) is a great blend of visual and musical storytelling; the solemn and yet calm hopeful music that leads you in this dusky forest with an abandoned haunted house in the middle of it it’s just magical (The switch remakes violates the entirety of the atmosphere).

If you are struggling to narrate a micro story I suggest starting by an idea and work around it; it can be about its ecosystem, culture, history and relevancy to the plot.
A swamp is soggy, full of marshes with pokemons such as wooper, shellos and carnivine. The trainers and people there may brawl and fend off all the bug pokemons pestering them, it could have been a fresh greenland before a catastrophic event happened, it could be an archeological site with abandoned monuments et cetera.

I have watched some months ago this long video about region design, which laid both objective and subjective points on how to turn a pixelated country into an interesting place to discover and explore, I recommend it if you are completely clueless

Oh! I watched that video to, its been a while, definitely worth a rewatch now that I'm actually making a fan game. And yeah all your points you just said definitely are great, especially the "starting with an idea" and kinda constructing something from that.

Week8 (8/31/2024):

This week was kinda all over the place, no singular focus, but did get a pretty good amount of stuff done, so lets get into it:

Trust Events:
I wrote the level 0 trust events for Willow and Lara, nothing much to say here, I’m happy with the trust events I have done.
On my todo list of things to get done:
  • Create level 1 trust events for all four women
  • Develop level 2 events for at least two characters (if time allows)
  • Create art for all the events
Besides that I'm a little concerned that players might initially dislike Lara since she's designed to be a jerk who gradually warms up to the player. However, I think her character will work out well in the long run so I'm not too worried.

Routes:
  • Route2: I made route 2 that connects Cassiopeia Academy and Lyra Town. It's a simple forest with some places to explore for some items, a couple items locked behind needing the Rock smasher item. This will be the real “Early route” early grass types, rodents, and basic wildlife. It has one spot that's inaccessible without swim, and a crater spot to the left that I think looks cool, overall, I'm pretty happy without it turned out.
  • Orion Cave: You might notice a cave entrance at the lower right of route 2, I’m calling this cave, “Orion Mine”, You won't actually be able to enter the mine until you get the Rock Smasher from Roxanne’s gym and you’ll see that there is a ladder in the bottom left going to a second floor, which won’t be accessible until you get whatever the equivalent of HM Swim will be in this game. For now, and for the rest of version 1.0 the ladder won't do anything, it’s just there to be something cool to look forward to in a future update.
  • Route 1: Lastly is route 1, this is a swampier damp forest, it’s connected to the lower exit of Lyra town and is connected to route 2 with Orion mine, for now the exit at the south of route 2 won’t lead anywhere but I’m thinking that’s where the water type gym will be for a future update. I haven't put any encounters in any of these routes yet, but I’ll figure it out soon. I guess some behind the scenes stuff, this was the first route I made for the game, I ended up repurposing it as a route for Lyra towns bottom exit, since it felt like it would make more sense for a swampy route to connect to a more humid or watery area instead of Cassiopeia Academy, which is why it's named "route 1"
Side Stuff:
  • Skip Time: I also added a feature where you can go to bed to pick what hour to skip time to. For now you need to pick the time in military time because math is annoying (so if you wanna skip to 7pm you need to input 7 + 12 which is 19). If you pick a time that’s before your current hour (so if it’s currently 12 o clock and you pick 1 am) then time will advance a full day first before going to that time you picked.
  • Generic NPC: I’ve been drawing up a generic male and female NPC sprite, here is the male, still unfinished, I looked at Summer Memories (might be my favorite H-game) generic sprites and decided to go with something that looks like that.

Enjoyable dev log as always, don’t you worry for Lara since on this site some of the jerk characters or ice queen types end up becoming fan favorites… except if you will constantly depict them as unreasonable assholes for the sake of it.
Since it’s a Pokémon game, it is expected (at least in the older generations) to have a jerk rival, it is the best part of the game beating up your antagonistic rival and seeing him fall. But since you got inspiration from Silver (which is one of the best rivals especially in the remake with his character arc and lore) it should be interesting.

For the routes they look nice, linear but standard for your first places to go around.
Albeit they will be truly alive with all the trainers and all the items scattered in places.

Oh so no real time application for the game clock, imo it‘s better, so you don’t have to wait in real life and control time and weather with rng.
(And yes summer memories it’s an H goty, now I understand the interest in that specific sex tags )

Edit: That YouTuber dropped a new video about atmosphere in Pokémon regions, seems worthy to check it out

Glad to hear it, definitely agree Silver is in the greats of being one of the best rivals Pokémon has had to ever, I'd say he's only second to Kieran.

I decided the game wouldn't have real-time pretty early on in development, I really don't think it should be the default for Pokémon essentials and don't really know why it is that way.

(And yes summer memories it’s an H goty, now I understand the interest in that specific sex tags )
For sure, actually a while back before I started Pokemon Love Link, I had 2 projects very inspired by summer memories, 1 ended up getting canned becuase I was working with an artist for one of them and it just didn't work out between us, he was a great guy but we had very different visions and the workload felt kinda imbalanced where I was doing alot of the work, the other one, which was also inspired by GBA games, stopped cuase of scope creep but I definitely wanna revisit it one day.
Here is some of what it looked like:

Didn’t play Scarlet and Violet I stopped at gen 7 but I take your word.

I don’t know maybe it’s more immersive for the devs.
Since they also believe multiplayer is a key gaming element for trading, they are definitely trying to turn the games more alive.
Remember when in Gen 5 they added seasons?
That was nice.

Truly a shame but sometimes it’s better to start with lower scope games.
Since the workload it’s less and smaller games, especially mods and fan games look at Toby fox, are the training ground for future developers.
And developing two games at once it’s always a death sentence for indie developers.
So see Pokemon love link as the setting stone for the future

and the plan is for trainers to levels scale with badge count (wild Pokémon do not). This system is inspired by a Pokémon Crystal ROM hack

I personally loved it when they added that feature in Gen 5. Really made the B/W and Black 2/White 2 games more immersive from a route exploration perspective. Adding exclusive Pokemon that you can only encounter during certain seasons made it more enticing for players to prowl around the routes during different seasons to see what they could catch. The season's mechanic was a nice touch indeed!

Speaking about region design, the original G/S games from Gen 2 were meant to represent various regions and provinces from Japan.

had a lot of these original Japanese-inspired unused maps that were meant to be included in the canonical Gold/Silver games but were later scrapped due to hardware performance limitations on the GameBoy (among other reasons).

For me personally, its gotta be N as the S tier (all-time great) rival for me personally. Followed closely by Hugh (from Black 2/White 2), Silver, Blue, Wally, and May.

That’s what she I said, there aren’t any other around like it… or

Speaking of this leveling scale mechanic, there was this other video which had some great points (although I disagree with certain statements), that summed perfectly the open world desire of the fan game:

Oh the nostalgia by that soundtrack, it was really a beautiful addition!
Even when dungeons completely changed or routed evolves with hidden paths with the arrival of winter or spring.
Deerling existed solemnly for that!
And I understand that it may have been a titanic endeavor bringing seasons in X and Y, but any innovation that gen 5 brought was suddenly cut off.

How could I have forgotten N!
He is the best rival but he feels so fleshed out that I didn’t even consider him a rival.
Mysterious and charming, he is the real protagonist of black and white with the solemn intro in the beginning.
You are right he is S tier.

Yeah, I really wanted to add it into my game, and I still might but it does seem like a very big hassle to add, I'm not ruling it out for a future update but yeah it'd be a pain in the ass to add right now, which is a shame since I really loved the feature in gen 5

for sure, that's why i decided to start with a fan game, it forces the scope to be smaller and gives you a general frame work to build from, aswell as good experience for when I end up making full games of my own.

Yes sirrrr, i have a ton of good memories with that one, i was able to mod my 3ds and get it in their with virtual console

No it will definitely be a gigantic hassle for a first build, maybe towards the end of the game, at league.
When you already have all the map planned out, because it’a not just a visual revamp but also gameplay wise.
You can easily avoid introduce seasons in certain areas with excuses such as “No, the climate here is constantly tropical” or “No here Kyurem froze the land forever” and so on.
You can add a timing system similar to the rune factory/Harvest moon series; 30 days for each season with an option to change it manually at the end of the game with a pokemon move or a key item.
for sure, that's why i decided to start with a fan game, it forces the scope to be smaller and gives you a general frame work to build from, aswell as good experience for when I end up making full games of my own.
We will be looking forward for your progresses
I actually cannot believe I forgot N, I guess I kinda didn't clock him as a rival but more antagonist, but yeah he is the GOAT. also hot too.
Same, maybe because he actually has weight on the plot, influences it and his objective is not to beat you at a rival battle but free the pokemon.
Gary is just an asshole, Silver same but has a character arc, May/Brandon are too chill (boring imo), Wally is great except and in general after gen 5 rivals are straight out not anymore as great.
Gen 6 had 4 of them, and I cannot even remember their name since they were underdeveloped and annoy as fuck.
Oh I think I've seen this video before, definitely worth a rewatch,
He is a great YouTubers but he mostly talks about 3D games

Even when dungeons completely changed or routed evolves with hidden paths with the arrival of winter or spring.
Yeah the hidden grotto's. I loved that mechanic a lot tbh

^ That screenshot was . Fun times indeed playing that game in the past. Although, its been so long that I don't recall much of the plot or anything at this point xD

It sucks that so many features were hidden behind special gifts.
I agree. I like fantasizing about, in an alternative universe, what if those features that were scrapped, i.e., all those missing areas, lost pokemon, etc got into the final cut of the games. But then again, there are instances of Pokemon foreshadowing the inclusion of new mons from older generations that get featured in their future games. For example, the munna reference from Gen 1:

Yeah Gen 6 rivals weren't the greatest tbh. Pretty forgettable for the most part.

I liked Shauna tho. She was decent.

Back in the days I bought the Pokemon black and white 2 guide which listed all the hidden grottos, it was a mesmerizing experience.
Albeit at some point I stopped reading it, if not I would have spoiled myself too much of it.
Still great mechanic.
Never played that Fangame, but if it has grottos it must be cool.

Munna is a famous example, but there other countless secrets that we finally know about thanks to leaks

He is a legend, he has some of the best and worst luck in Pokémon .
He stills streams to this day.

There was that motherfucking kid who liked to dance, the embarrassment and the pure inutility, they tried to create 4 rivals for 4 different types of gameplay and they failed with all.
But yes Shauna was decently enjotable.

Yeah, I mean if you wanted to holistically figure out where the grottos were without the use of a guide, it could lead to more of an immersive exploration experience :sneaky:

But there is a guilty pleasure at reading wikis and guides.
Except when you discover that you fucked up an entire segment of a game or have to grind for 10 hours just for an item.
And then you just give up
