I think anything above 21 to 28 years old is appropriate and what I usually look for in games, sometimes I have an issue with an MC that looks like he's 30 but is introduced as an 18 y/o, but nothing that prevents me to play unless he's really immature or a virgin that gets frustrated by seeing boobs irl, that is where I usually draw the line or I get impatient and drop out. My opinion though.

30's, just because teens and 20's often involve boring school related storylines and such, but the character is still young enough to be in interesting scenarios.
I'd prefer early 20s because I like college-themed VNs. Still, the more important part is that the MC is competent. It's not rare to see a VN where the author makes the MC do stupid shit and players are supposed to suspend disbelief by chalking it up to his inexperience in life relative to middle-aged characters.
For some reason, it seems like devs find it easier to write competent middle-aged MCs or rather the good writers tend towards writing MCs to be in that demographic. Not sure which. Although, I think it's more likely to be the former rather than the latter.
I know that sounds like I'd prefer the MC to be anywhere between 30 and 45 but not really. I'm not asking for some character in college to be wise beyond his years. I'm just saying I want to see ones who have more than two brain cells to rub together.

For me it doesn't make that much difference. Anything from college age to middle age is fine. Underage is off limits and no geezers.

Honestly, anything is fine for me, I actually appreciate a little variety. So while something between 20 and 35 is probably my preferred range, both older and younger is also ok.
But I am REALLY sick of those supposedly "18" year olds who look and act like they are 13 except for their horse cocks.

Same. I cannot understand why that is so popular or how so many people love it. I totally get the fantasy of being the younger man with mature women, but why not make him tall and fit?

I tend to agree with the sentiment of the appropriate age for the story. If your story is an incest fetish sexual awakening with the "landlady" then your MC is probably "18" for that purpose. If you story is a Noir detective that's seen it all, your MC probably needs to be closer to 40 or so. The MC needs to drive the story (however much there is of it) in a way that's intended. You want them to be naive and bumbling, make them young. You want them wise and knowledgeable, they probably need to be older.

I voted "other" because it really depends for me. I will say that, as someone in his 40's, I tend to prefer the MC to be in his 30's or 40's. But sometimes I play as a young man, maybe 18 years old, or in his early 20's, and if he's really likeable then I enjoy playing as that guy.
An example of a great older MC, at least in my opinion, would have to be the guy from Now & Then. He's just awesome, and I really enjoyed seeing thing from his perspective.
An example of a likeable young MC, again, in my opinion, would be the funny but actually cool and brave young fella from Once in a Lifetime. Another one is from a brilliant but sadly abandoned A.O.A. Academy. That MC is still pretty young, but man is he a personable dude.
I just don't enjoy playing as a young and really stupid whiny MC. But then I could chalk it all up to them simply being young and ignorant and all that. What's actually worse, though, is an older MC who is still whiny, stupid, immature, and disrespectful, but acts like he's the good guy when he's just being a douche. I can't stand those.

Now & Then is far too heavy and intense for me. I'd love more lighter games with an experienced 30 or 40 something guy who gets a chance through some catalyst to hook up and have a good time with a variety of women around his own age. Fun, non-committal, consensual, hot and messy sex.
40+ make MC a real man for a change, with character and experience, older man are often more attractive to the kind of girl depicted in porn game anyway (daddy issues)

You're right, Now & Then is pretty heavy. I guess I find myself really getting into heavy subject matters in these VN's. It seems that may be the reason why I also like games such as Leap of Faith, Acting Lessons, and Avalon. Not to say I don't enjoy playing lighter games, because I do. In terms of those, Become a Rock Star, Timeless Island, Melody, and Callisto are among those I personally found enjoyable.
As for the romantic interests, I tend to gravitate toward those who are younger than the MC. They don't need to be in their teens like 18 or 19 necessarily, but a lot of these characters kind of end up being in that age bracket, anyway. I just feel strange when my LI is older than the MC, like in some mother/son type situation. But then I'm partial to VN's that are romantic, and I get all excited when the MC and his LI end up getting married and live happily ever after and stuff like that, lol. That said, I also enjoy harem endings quite a bit as well, lol.
