No, It is not abandoned. The dev does "what if" in his free time. As the main story is in development, I don't think the dev has much free time.

Due to amount of work increasing with every chapter (each chapter is longer and has more scenes than the last) the dev decided to suspend the What Ifs to avoid burnout and maintain consistency with chapter release dates
