Kind of the same. It doesn't have to be perfectly realistic because I can just blow over the details and focus on the character and story aspects. If I wanted something that was 100% accurate in these technical details, I'd read the car manual.
Yeah its not really a big deal. This is fiction, and you'll find artistic license in just about all of them. The jargon, whether it's correct in the real world or not, just serves to authenticate the character as an expert to the reader.
Yeah, it's like law or medical procedurals. You can't watch an episode of E.R. or Law & Order with anyone who actually knows anything about medicine or law, without them rolling their eyes in exasperation or pulling their hair out in frustration.
This also isn't a new phenomenom either. I love the film Vantage Point...a classic and one of my faves, but the scene where they are both going flat out next to each other (which for his car is silly enough to begin with) and then the E-Type 'downshifts' and accelerates away (without blowing numerous holes and bits of metal through the bonnet) is one of the absolute silliest things I've ever seen on film lol.
