Hey all, new to the site. I downloaded Episode 1 and finished it all the way through. Downloaded the latest version.
The save files seem to load on the new version but the saves seem to be broken (keep getting "couldn't find a place to rollback"). Any tips to transfer the files the right way?
Well, playing the unmodded official version of the game is the best way to ensure save file compatibility between updates.
If you created your saves playing a
modded game* and now are trying to play the original or the other way around, then this is likely to happen.
The only way I know how to "make the old saves compatible" is to copy game script *.rpyc files (only the ones inside any of the subfolders of the subfolder named "game" is what we're talking about from here forward) from the game version your saves were created with, to the version you are now trying to play.

In case your saves are from a modded game, then
you have to repeat this with every new update of the game and carry these *.rpyc files around until the game ends
or you decide to play the unmodded game again from the beginning and create brand new saves.
If you created your saves in the unmodded game and are now trying a mod, just re-extract the game into a new folder and play it without mods
or delete any *.rpyc files from the mod.

* Basically, each compiled *.rpyc script file contains a unique index and each Ren'Py save file created while running it corresponds to this index. Trying to open a save file created using some *.rpyc file with a
different index usually fails, showing you the infamous rollback error. In case the index only differs slightly,
some of the saves
might work while others don't. The only way to find out which ones do, is to try to load each save file. For example, if the last save doesn't work, try the previous one, then even an older one and so on.
