The the default version is not the "True Edition" version, the patch reverts the default version to the original True Edition that the game was to be played in. (((most players play the "True Edition" version.)))
The very first version of the game that came out did not need a patch for the "True Edition" to be played, only later did they have to change the story so patreon would not kick them off there site but now its gone anyway.
You can also look at the OP pic and see it says "Taboo Edition" the one that was first uploaded here.

Pretty sure OP knows that. He implied that the setup (sending triplets to MC) doesn't make much sense without the patch.

An update comes out then several patches to fix the bugs.
A main update comes out about once a year then several bug fixes come out.
5 years with 6 main updates then a bunch of bug fixes after each main update.
