Yes, yes, I guess given enough time, the knee-jerk reactions die down and we get some actually well-thought responses. Yes, I do get that it's not a 1-to-1 translation that someone wants to really do that. What I actually said (they've deleted it because apparently having an opposing opinion is bad...) is I don't get the DRAW of it. Meaning, I get that people are drawn to things for different reasons, and sometimes those reasons don't mean they actually want to do it. What I'm saying is I don't get the DRAW to these kinds of fantasies. That's it.

Sometimes, there's too much "access" that shapes mainstream creations. It shows up in our communities here a lot.

Now when it is baked into the novel, like here, or -in a surprisingly good story- like in A Petal Among Thorns (the developing sequel is really good too), it's really up to the discerning reader to decide if it feels "believable" enough to push on... assuming they're not explicitly there for the incest tag.

It appears that you are completely turned off by the idea of it, and I completely understand that. Because while I am open to a good story, it does absolutely nothing for me as far as the "taboo" or whatever excuse most people use that are here for that. I think, for me, the reasoning I've touched on is why I can usually tolerate it. I generally have to "transport" myself in my fantasy while reading something like this. I can't read something with incest in it where the world hasn't been transformed or, at minimum, there aren't huge mitigating circumstances like a coma... or 20 years apart. Or witness protection... like in Bare Witness... there's a character in that named Hannah that is basically the best dirty talker in any of these VNs lol... and the MC's cousin is sweet and just always had a crush or whatever, but Hannah walks in on her giving the MC fellatio and open-mindedly (harem game, MASH all the way lol) accepts it and starts talking... my point is, I wasn't even thinking about the cousin thing until she says something in the MC's ear and triggered his "arrival" and I thought, "okay, now THAT'S hot". And then I could understand many of the incest "enjoyers" chasing that runner's high of that. There are moments where there's an interesting scenario, social mores change, or someone just says something dirty and I'm on board for the writing. Otherwise, like you, I'll pass. I uninstall if it just reads like a bad incest video on PornHub or something. No thanks.

I think most people would agree with you that they don't want every single decent game out there to be "special service" for something they don't like. I do wish more people were accepting (not meaning you in any way, moreso the "incest or I'm unsupporting your Patreon" crowd) of slightly alternate stories. My very favorite is Pale Carnations and I have absolutely ZERO interest in BDSM. I just can't look away at Edwin's plight lol. I keep checking in on Radiant hoping for signs of continuing work because I love the art and the character interplay is heartwarming. I hope you find more of what you're looking for, too!

Its not a tipical romance story, it spices up with something that is not common (and for good reasons). Its another element, a rare one, and no, its not a preference.

Its the same with harem, it unrealistic as hell, but because of it, its something attractive to many.

I would NEVER play a game where the story is similar to my own story, there is no reason for that in my opinion, i already know that story, its like reason a book that you already know the story

I want unreal stories, i want things that dont happen in real life. Hell, in some games i dont even care about the lewd scenes if the story is really good but isnt normal (like in talotral games)

Yah man, thanks for the well-thought-out response, I'll take a look at A Petal Among Thorns. And yes, for me it's actively a turn-off. Like it's not simply something I don't prefer, I really dislike the idea. I actually have a very strong parental instinct, I'm not yet a father, but I have a very protective nature about me, so for me the mere concept of being sexual with someone that's like a daughter to me is pretty repulsive to be really honest. Again, no offense to anyone who disagrees with me, I can only speak for myself!

And what you mention about the cousin thing, while I don't prefer that either, I don't really find that actually "repulsive" since you generally don't grow up with a cousin (like you do with a sister) and you shouldn't have a parental/protective obligation to a cousin (like you do with a daughter). So a cousin relationship is more of a "technical" relationship, but in terms of like if society had no say in it, I don't see anything inherently repulsive about the idea. I personally am still not into that, but I don't have the strong feelings about it like I do with immediate family like mother, daughter, and sister.

The one thing I kind of don't like about this game so far besides that though, is that it really does feel like the story almost revolves around the assumption that you will choose to become romantic with your daughters. Like I've tried turning them down over and over, and the game keeps on forcing these situations onto the MC and between the choices the internal monologues always consist of the MC rationalizing to himself that it's ok to have a sexual relationship with his daughters. Like, yes, I actually understand that if the story revolves around that, it would be much more difficult for the writer to keep a cohesive story moving forward without that element. But surprisingly I found a game that seems to do this very well.

There is a game called Our Red String. There's no incest or anything in there, but the game really intends for the two main characters to get together, Ian and Lena. In fact, the game actually switches control between those two characters. And while in the beginning few chapters you really do have to try really hard to avoid them two getting together, it's possible. Now, it's not incest, so that's not the reason why I didn't want them to get together. It's because I was REALLY interested in one of the other girls, Holly. And that game is less of a Harem game, the main characters are more-or-less loyal (excluding lesbian scenes and such) once you get them together. So if I wanted to get with Holly, I had to basically avoid ANY sex scenes with Lena. But once I basically got past the first few chapters and got with Holly, the game stopped putting in those situations where it tries to coerce Ian and Lena together, and now Ian and Holly are together and Ian and Lena actually has this BEAUTIFUL platonic friendship. I'm so happy I decided to go that route, I am REALLY enjoying that aspect of it.

Anyway, I'm rambling on, but give Our Red String a try, the writing in that game is phenomenal.

Yeah, that's real... like in Pale Carnations I find attraction to Hana and Mina because although they aren't my type, I question things in these novels too... for Hana, she's actively disgusted (yet trapped) by what she's participating in and is looking for a friend that can relate to her, and Mina is playing "the game of life" if only to feel normal, because she's not sure if she's feeling anything at all... that's the crux of the MC's journey to decide if he's actually a deviant sociopath or not... can he really change for the better for his mother's sake? Is he showing a facade over a sadist personality? I love shit like that even though I'm not really into the particular fetish content... and yet it sometimes will have its moment where I think, "ahhhh, yeah that might do it on my birthday once a year or something." Fair question... for me one of the huge turn-offs is hidden camera content and sleep-based sexual assault. I find it abhorrent. The only way I will decide to let something happen like that is if it's not blatantly for my benefit as a reader. If its not gratuitous like a lot of those time/date sandbox games, then I'll sigh nice and hard and try to go in a different direction. The MC in Personal Assistant has control issues that you can choose to turn into a corruptive influence or allow him to loosen his grasp a little... the scene at the beginning when he spies on the woman and shuts off the wifi so she won't call her mother and sister seemed in character for him at that moment so I thought, "Okay. I wouldn't do that but I guess this guy would," but if it becomes something later on where I have the choice to use cameras and feel her up at night, no thanks.

To answer your question, for me, I find commonality in the human condition. I don't like cuck porn, but technically all the straight porn I watch has a dick in it that's not mine, I just ignore it, like our brain ignores our nose from our eyesight. A Petal Among Thorns is going to actively upset your sensibilities at first, but putting yourself in the shoes of someone that greatly loves their daughters but has been separated from them in such a difficult situation might allow you to compartmentalize the story a bit. It helps that the father isn't the one initiating this. You get in his head, you see what he's thinking, you realize he's trying hard af not to give in, you see the rules he tries to make (and in the sequel, you see an explanation for why the daughter is acting this way and it gets interesting enough, at least for me, to continue). There's also a pair of characters that render a different take on these sort of relationships and their situation is very singular in nature... let's just say that this novel doesn't give off the "well everyone is doing it so why not us" vibe you get from Dating My Daughter (I slogged through it and will never pick it up again). In A Petal Among Thorns, there's a fierce love that seems more than just carnal in a way that seems rooted in a singular desperation and fear of loss -like nothing you or I would ever consider- that they eventually express physically. I think it comes with life-upending situations that we're lucky enough not to deal with (knock on wood). There's a certain beauty to that, so I don't feel so bad just enjoying the absolutely gorgeous LIs lol... I never feel like, "oh, well this is an option for me and my future kids and here's the handbook," y'know?

Yeah, I get the impression that the daughter relationships are more kinetic here in Radiant so it's not as interesting as it could be. While I do really enjoy reading it, I would like to have seen more personal drama within the MC where he has to make choices between starting relationships sexually with his girls or the other LIs... right now it seems like the only real struggle is between the girls for his attention. While that's fun to a point, and I get the author's intention to follow through with that (I really like Maddison because I've dated women that put up that front but they crave a loving embrace but need to understand discipline to some extent), and I like the idea of growing together that way... earning her loyalty... the difference is that you do that without sex with your kids IRL lol... in reality, you're doing it with someone else's grown daughter, not your own!

Our Red String has been in my backlog a while... it's female protag and lesbian, right? Once again, not my thing, but I was gonna try it anyway. How else do we learn to understand each other? I guess its par for my course

Yeah, that's real... like in Pale Carnations I find attraction to Hana and Mina because although they aren't my type, I question things in these novels too... for Hana, she's actively disgusted (yet trapped) by what she's participating in and is looking for a friend that can relate to her, and Mina is playing "the game of life" if only to feel normal, because she's not sure if she's feeling anything at all... that's the crux of the MC's journey to decide if he's actually a deviant sociopath or not... can he really change for the better for his mother's sake? Is he showing a facade over a sadist personality? I love shit like that even though I'm not really into the particular fetish content... and yet it sometimes will have its moment where I think, "ahhhh, yeah that might do it on my birthday once a year or something." XD

Fair question... for me one of the huge turn-offs is hidden camera content and sleep-based sexual assault. I find it abhorrent. The only way I will decide to let something happen like that is if it's not blatantly for my benefit as a reader. If its not gratuitous like a lot of those time/date sandbox games, then I'll sigh nice and hard and try to go in a different direction. The MC in Personal Assistant has control issues that you can choose to turn into a corruptive influence or allow him to loosen his grasp a little... the scene at the beginning when he spies on the woman and shuts off the wifi so she won't call her mother and sister seemed in character for him at that moment so I thought, "Okay. I wouldn't do that but I guess this guy would," but if it becomes something later on where I have the choice to use cameras and feel her up at night, no thanks.

R@pe or sexual assault in general is another one of my turn-offs, and another thing that at least WAS part of a lot of Japanese adult media. I'm not sure if it still is or not, hopefully not... But if a game glorifies that, then yah, another game I will just uninstall...

To answer your question, for me, I find commonality in the human condition. I don't like cuck porn, but technically all the straight porn I watch has a dick in it that's not mine, I just ignore it, like our brain ignores our nose from our eyesight. I see an incest tag but lots of other cool shit and I'll install, look at what else is going on, and if it's a stupid "landlady" scenario or the guy is just looking to get off on his mom, I'm usually going to delete the VN. But, if it's got gorgeous renders, a believable explanation or a lewd patch that gets rid of the "landlady" bullshit, then I might give it a chance... I'd rather read "mom" instead of "landlady", but if step-whatever" makes sense, then I just deal with that... the incest tag will be like the nose on my face that I rarely actually see

As I've mentioned, there's a lot I'm not into, but I have growled a, let's say, more passionate intonation of, "good girl," into my partner's ear and she would practically wet the bed. But other times with other partners, and yes, more than once, that has either ground a good night to halt or prompted a post-coitus correction... in ways that made me feel that there was an abusive history I wasn't going to be privy to... but the lesson was that I was not to say it again. Sometimes, in the moment, we'll say or do something and it's a turn-on because of the surprise... then, in a VN, if I'm feeling frisky while I'm reading, and someone says some wild shit about where they want the MC to finish or some fetish, I might not be a card-carrying deviant of a particular fetish, but I'll be goddamned if that wasn't enough at that moment to tip me over... every now and then, and surprisingly. I guess it comes with the confidence that I know I don't need it to finish, and it's not something I'm actively looking for IRL.

A Petal Among Thorns is going to actively upset your sensibilities at first, but putting yourself in the shoes of someone that greatly loves their daughters but has been separated from them in such a difficult situation might allow you to compartmentalize the story a bit. It helps that the father isn't the one initiating this. You get in his head, you see what he's thinking, you realize he's trying hard af not to give in, you see the rules he tries to make (and in the sequel, you see an explanation for why the daughter is acting this way and it gets interesting enough, at least for me, to continue). There's also a pair of characters that render a different take on these sort of relationships and their situation is very singular in nature... let's just say that this novel doesn't give off the "well everyone is doing it so why not us" vibe you get from Dating My Daughter (I slogged through it and will never pick it up again). In A Petal Among Thorns, there's a fierce love that seems more than just carnal in a way that seems rooted in a singular desperation and fear of loss -like nothing you or I would ever consider- that they eventually express physically. I think it comes with life-upending situations that we're lucky enough not to deal with (knock on wood). There's a certain beauty to that, so I don't feel so bad just enjoying the absolutely gorgeous LIs lol... I never feel like, "oh, well this is an option for me and my future kids and here's the handbook," y'know?

Yes, definitely a good story trumps everything else. And I would probably appreciate that it has a deeper story. But my mind sometimes can't avoid the meta and I just think about despite the complex story and relationship the writer has made, that it's all just a convoluted excuse to satisfy that father/daughter fetish in an adult game. And in that way I would probably still not like playing through that if that was the only choice... But again, just my own personal things, not saying you should feel the same way.

Yeah, I get the impression that the daughter relationships are more kinetic here in Radiant so it's not as interesting as it could be. While I do really enjoy reading it, I would like to have seen more personal drama within the MC where he has to make choices between starting relationships sexually with his girls or the other LIs... right now it seems like the only real struggle is between the girls for his attention. While that's fun to a point, and I get the author's intention to follow through with that (I really like Maddison because I've dated women that put up that front but they crave a loving embrace but need to understand discipline to some extent), and I like the idea of growing together that way... earning her loyalty... the difference is that you do that without sex with your kids IRL lol... in reality, you're doing it with someone else's grown daughter, not your own!

The whole struggle for attention thing, it's something that's present in a lot of adult games with multiple potential partners. To me it just comes off as the writer writing his fantasy of having every woman chase after you. And that's another thing that I roll my eyes on a lot in Radiant, how every character just melts all over MC the moment they see him. Like the waitress, the daughters, Brook, Mira, literally every female. And it seems even the mother of the person MC kills will do it, but for once it isn't instant, although I'm sure the writer wanted it to be but then realized just how EXTRA ridiculous that would have been. And like the wife of the neighbor just randomly calling him handsome on their first meeting, like seriously? I don't know, I guess a lot of lonely guys would love to fantasize that about themselves but to me it just makes me roll my eyes when games do this, lol.

No, you alternate between two MCs. Ian and Lena. So you CAN make Lena into a lesbian, but the game's primary relationship is actually between Ian and Lena. And the point of alternating characters that end up together I guess is to show they both have choices they make that can either help or hurt the relationship. However, the really beautiful thing about that game is that even though the game was intended to have Ian and Lena together, if you wanted to, you could make it so those two don't have ANY romantic relationship so that Ian and Lena can pursue other choices. It's not a harem game, so in the beginning they can fool around with others before Ian and Lena become "official" and after they become official I think they can cheat as well, but it's never like a situation where they all know of the others and it's ok, of course most of those are written by men, so it's just like my last point of the male fantasy of how every woman melts upon seeing you, it's one of those male fantasies of having all the women they want and they are all somehow ok with it so there's no drama. But yes, so the writer of ORS went to the length of writing dialogue and paths that ARE MEANINGFUL even if you deviate completely from her intended plan to have Ian and Lena as the central relationship. Like I've said, that's what I did, and it never regresses back to a reliance on them two together. It actually almost seems like it's meant to be. Lena and Ian in my playthrough have this beautiful platonic friendship while Ian is with another character that I really liked. So a lot of work went into that game if she actually wrote all new lines and new scenes specifically for all the alternative paths you could take.

But I would have to say the character-building in that game is really great. It spends a lot of time really building on the characters before you start having "sexy time" with them. So it's also a bit more believable in that sense. And even the friendships between the guys in that game are enjoyable to play, and there are a lot of choices that affect your platonic relationships as well. Anyway, just like before, I'm rambling on again, haha.

This might be one of the best conversations Ive seen in this site. I really wanted to respond to something, and then Id keep reading and there would be something else to respond to, and so forth. Thus, figured it might be a bit easier to just make a post.

1. Someone said that being adult games they should be able to turn you on. While I get that viewpoint, Id disagree, personally. For me, what constitutes a good game here is if you removed the lewd, would you still enjoy it? The lewd is the bonus to a great story then. Ones that just force the scenes can be jarring to the flow of the story. I want it to be where the character makes me desire a lewd scene, not needing a lewd scene to create desire.

2. Thank god more people are saying it. Maybe if enough people say this, it make create an upward trend. Im referring to female characters "assets" God dammit do I hate the over sized T&A thing. I think it detracts from what could be gorgeous people. In a lot of these game, it might say a character has nice little tits, and Im looking at them thinking, "No, those are still DD's" Like people arent wandering around and everyone has G Cups!

3. The incest issue. I admit, I usually turn it on in options or patch. Am I a fan of incest? Not in the slightest. However, the MC lives with landlady and her 2 daughters so they are my room mates and constantly saying good morning landlady or yay landlady made me pancakes... just doesnt make a lick of sense. Not a fan of trying to bang mom, but at least the overall situation makes some sense.. Please leave Pae Carnations alone folks... its doing the right things...But that brings me to the next point.....

4. What is the obsession with mom? or friends mom? or somebody's mom? or the older teacher? or basically all the MILF content? You know how hard it is in a lot of games to avoid the mothers and milfs?

5. last bullet point, I promise. City of Broken Dreamers is probably my favorite game so far from this site. I would definetly play without the porn, and for the most part, the porn there is makes senseI enjoy the stories and characters and I dont think theres any railroading of making the MC bang anyone. Actually, I think it would be possible to skip all the sex scenes, maybe. The attractions to the MC generally make sense, and sometimes it isnt even an attraction that sets up anything. With that said, if Im not wanting a strong story or something, then I do like to go all the way into fantasy land. I know a lot of people arent into forced sex acts by whatever means. Violence, blackmail, corruption, sleeping, whatever. cool cool. I on the other hand, when Im going for just a lust filled adventure look for the cruelest and most brutal thing I can, and that can be hard to find. Euphoria kinda got there... but I wanted to see it go even further. And towards the end, the story starts to get a little weird. I want to play an absolutely depraved MC who has no qualms or remorse. What is the draw? It is absolutely not something to condone in reality. In reality most people strive to at least be decent. But in this world of fiction, let absolutely loose. its escaping the reality and just having fun. Again, not the majority of things I look for, but maybe the one out of ten.

I'll admit I'm very drawn to incest stories to the point some without tend to bore me unless the story line is really good, Eternum, Love of Magic and Leap of Faith come to mind but I have my own personal reasons for that.

I also very much appreciate V/Ns where the models are proportioned realistically, including the male ones. I'm not a fan of the anomalous genetic mutation penis, it hurts the story immersion. I also admit it was Olivia I was most drawn to in Radiant.

I'm most drawn to more romantic driven stories, I've been a writer of stories for more than a few years now that have been posted at various sites so the writing quality is important to me. Sometimes I'm amazed at how much some people are willing to look past sloppy, lazy, or derivative writing. Some of the more popular V/Ns have some of the worst writing. It seems as though writing a good MC is particularly hard for some Devs. They make a V/N that looks good but can't create a decent MC. (Looking at you Midnight Paradise and B.a.D. which is way over rated from a writing stand point among others)

I don't care for the sleep creep thing, I prefer MCs who show some respect to female characters they profess to care about. I don't mind slow burn stories with good character development that are well fleshed out. Too often lewd and crude are confused for scintillating and titillating. I don't pull punches as can be seen in some of my reviews such as A Wife and Mother.

First i would like to say that incest is neither a requirement or a deal breaker for me, more stuff besides that will influence wether i end up liking a story or not.
With that said if there is a patch i tend to install it, because the "landlady" thing sounds utterly ridiculous.

Something people miss in this "incest or not?" discussion, incest premises aren't one and the same, some are better than others.
Radiant here, is about girls who never met their father until they were grown up, that is (imo) a good premise, i can see both sides having a lot of confusing thoughts upon having their lives shaken upside down.
The bachelor who is suddenly living with 3 hot nubile girls but is suppoused to stay away because they are his daughters.
And the girls who never had a father figure, now have to share a roof with this (suppousedly) hunk of a man and don't know how to deal with this...
Both sides aren't used to this and they've been suddenly dropped into this situation, i can understand the confusion it generates.

On the other hand we have the ever popular, son moves back home after 5(or so) years...
I can understand the mom being elated with her son being back, and taking notice of how much more grown up he looks... still from those 2 things to jumping his bones it's quite the stretch.
