Incoming long boi!!!
Why wouldn't she try hard to reestablish herself? It's not like she was dethroned by the will of the people. She's not trying to return from years of inactivity. Hell the whole games occurs within months iirc. She suffered a sudden coup from the inside. Then imprisoned while still being the rightful heir. And saying the legitimacy is foul because of dragon might is weird. Replace dragon with army and you get many a kingdom. It also ignores her unique bloodline that allows her to birth dragons unlike everyone else's kobolds. Which would've automatically ascended her family from when dragons were a lot more common and revered. And again, replace dragon with army and you have standard kingdom. A kingdom's army just like a dragon, is not a force coming from the rulers themselves. And no, Balthorne was not right in what he did. Because it was made clear that he was a failure in his rule and made things much worse. Then this last bit, huh? Her legitimacy is whatever was decided when the kingdom came to be. And how is it just tyrannical? Some dragons were tyrants. Some weren't, like the dragon that came before the player. Can't just label tyrant because someone has and wields power.
Yeah that is the problem though. She has no power and the point is precisely that she does not have an army because her guard rebelled against her. Aside from that Legitimacy is not only build on force, it is also build on the loyality, just rule and social contracts. We are talking about a feudal society here, aside from the royal/palace guards, rulers (historically) didnt have big standing armies to enforce their rule with and they didnt need to for most of the time. Their rule was based on allegiances, contracts and the loyality of the nobility. To some degree this is even true for modern societies.
Clearly Adeline had none of that personally and that Balthorne was able to pull this whole stunt speaks to the fact that at least her recent family hadnt had much of that either. To me it all reads like that the only reason they were in power was the fact that they had a mythical force at their side that did their bidding for them and feared the nobility and populace into subservience. It should come at no surprise that someone tried to get rid of that at the first opportunity they got because that is precisly what always happens when you exclusively rule by force and fear.
(I'll give though that Adeline maybe hasnt much personal fault in this and it's more her parents/ancestors fault, but that is life. Sometimes you lose on no fault of your own.)
This is a weird framing. It's not like she imported an invasive species, went outside, then said let's fuck this natural balance up! She gave birth to the dragon because it was needed. Then it escaped because of the the coup and impending demise. To which we as the players decide how things go. You make it seem like her intent was to just fuck shit up.
Fair point. At the beginning of the story that is true and here I retro-actively assigned her blame for something that will happen to at least some degree over the course of the game, but that is hindsight on my part and the only counterpoint would be that she maybe staked her expectations to high, so my bad.
....what? She gave birth to a dragon. The way it was done is fucked. But birthing dragons isn't some unnatural anomaly and auto doom sentence. If it wasn't for the last king and queen pulling a perma disappearing act. Another dragon would've been born, she would've been married to it, on the throne, knocked up, business as usual. But this next bit is really confusing... what was she supposed to do? She was imprisoned. And yes she expected to rule, while fulfilling her natural duties, by her right. And for the dragon to do what dirty work? Come back to claim their rightful throne? To save her? The mom/future baby momma/wife/queen? Why would she not hope for that?
I mean she can personally hope for that to happen, but that is all wishful delusion on her part. She expects a dragon that has by all accounts virtually no connection to her aside from "I am your mom, go kill Balthorne for me" to just solve her issues for her the instance it's born. Honestly the fact that we as the players even go to do that eventually is more by virtue of the game forcing us narratively to do so. At least I see no reason for a dragon to really care about some throne somewhere when he really doesnt have a reason to do so. You are clearly in the position to do more or less what you want anyways.
In any case the dragon has no reason to specifically care what Adeline wants and that's precisely the issue again. She expects things to allign with her wishes while no one else has reason or motiviation to comply with them. Her entire world view is ultimately entitled. (Again she was born into this, so by virtue of her upbringing this might be her natural expectation, but reality has no obligation to comply with the expectations of anyone.)
Also I won't go into another whole tangent about what legitimate rule is based on and what constitutes as such and frankly there have been philosophers struggling to define and explain it for the past 3000 years that were much smarter than me, so why dont you give some of them a read. It's a fascinating topic imo. (I can wholeheartedly recommend the "History of Philosophy without any Gaps" by Peter Adamsson, a great podcast with attached website).
And again.... what? Is it really a delusion when you as the player can literally make it happen? If the coup never happened, things would've more then likely proceeded exactly as she wanted it. And let's be honest here. She is the default choice. With everything else being alternatives. As for the rest... imma be honest. It just sounds like you don't like her.
You are god damn right, that I dont like that entitled little brat of a wannabe queen
(Tbf the story doesnt do much to make me like her. You get to know all the other "waifus" much more intimately and by virtue of that she falls down the end, so maybe not even her fault. There is just simply less of a personal connection to her)
P.S.: If I had the choice I'd probably sent her off to house arrest somewhere where she can pick up knitting or whatever but that's no choice, so it's either dungeon or queen and I dont feel like indulging her, so maybe she can hope for the dev to eventually have some mercy for her? Wouldnt be the first time she hoped for a third party intervention xP
