the ones that don't hit don't often leave you with a bad taste or anything though.
Even a failed joke can leave you with some depth of the character though. Gary (the MC) making jokes that fall flat (at least for me) give me a sense of his character. Same goes with others (e.g. the Vineeta 'best friend' image sent to Chloe). I think people tend to overlook how important that is, and how, in a longer sequence (like bringing Chloe homework) that plays out to flavour both Gary, and his relationship with Chloe (and even Vineeta, though they've just met).
The jokes may not be my style/flavour, but I value anything that gives characters depth. And, people can say what they want about it, the characters are, at least thus far, fairly consistent. We see some nearfield accommodation behaviour at times (which makes them more human), and the speed of growth/adaptation is anime-like (or cartoonish, if you prefer), but it all adds up.
There are other games here (I won't break the rules and compare) where the flow similarly adds to characters, but often the consistency isn't there, or reasons for it breaking isn't explained well.
