I suspect MC hasn't hit the bottom of the pit yet, and I'm expecting the doctor's silence to have a reason and be a mystery who will be further developed in, it's the only thing that makes sense now, for the way the story is presented to us. Still it bothers me that his son is studying medicine but MC didn't consider asking him for pills or at least have him ask his professors for opinions etc, it would be much safer and ethically unambiguous
