You're half right, this was done by the devs to not draw comparisons (and legal shit) from the real Poison, not from localization
ニューハーフ means Newhalf, a JP term for shemales
That said Akira does think that in JP terms she's a female but trans in the US

I'm going to assume the animation will have a werewolf but I have a question. Has Rekin not yet revealed who the female character in the animation will be or has he already revealed it?

Yup, werewolf, mmo support class girl, no reveal who. Though, last yr he explained the set up, "The idea being the scene like an fantasy RPG MMO, where support/healer fantasy girl tries to find a group for a dungeon - they start it but suddently her whole group DCs and she is left vs whatever monsters are there"
