Yep beta versions in this sea of indy (A)VN developers should always be done by people that are closer/supporting of the development of the game, specially the ones that are almost there from the beginning. It is needed a good level of trust to give a barely tested version to someone. Of course probably the alpha version was tested by the developer (solo/team) first but it is just a first test phase with a residual testing sample. It usually needs a larger sample to be more efficient. No, they're annoyed by inept people playing beta versions, getting their saves borked and asking for support or complaining about buggy releases.
And rightfully so.
A few developers seem to delegate beta testing to their higher tier supporters but it doesn't seem a good practice unless they close that tier just for their closer and trusted supporters. Saw some "chaos" in game threads where beta versions were leaked, besides the probably loss of revenue they get bombarded with complaints and unofficial reports.
Of course it is different in other type of games like MMORPGs that usually semi open by registry or invite players to join their beta testing phase. Maybe that happens with other AAA games but probably there is some legal bind by a contract that give high penalties in case of leaks, not really sure, would need to make a search about the topic since never been part of it.
