Always worked for me, I simply pause when near the 5GB limit, change server and resume the download. Never had any problems doing it like that. And it is the most basic proton vpn.

If you don't have a static ip you can reset your network card when you reach the cap then resume download

I use the Windscribe browser extension, it caps at 10gb but it doesn't actually register anything when you download from mega for me for some reason so its free.

AFAIK the rule is not sharing the Patreon provided links, there's also something about reporting the thread with your link but I don't remember exactly how
