I'm assuming that Brigitte's first move on retaking her throne will be having her spymaster executed along with every other miserable toad complicit in keeping her there, not least her gaslighting wannabe mistress.

I'll put it this way: if there's no option for Brigitte to have public execution of her spymaster (at the very least for treason, although the overall incompetence is adding to that) as well as all her agents who were "just following orders" while knowing what she's actually doing, i'm gonna riot. Especially if i'm instead railroaded in some kind of "understanding and forgiveness" or, worse yet, thanks.

I'm excluding people who were genuinely clueless about the spymaster's doing and believed she's doing her best to find the person she's supposed to protect. But these who knew and collaborated with her? They'll (better) get exactly what they deserve.

I'd argue that knowingly putting your monarch in prolonged, mortal danger (because it's not like she was actually protected there from getting killed by her captor if he for some reason felt like wringing her neck after getting insulted one too many times) instead of rescuing her, especially when protecting royal figures from harm is one's actual job, comes close enough to actual regicide to warrant treating it as comparably serious offense.

The optics of meantime putting a double on the throne and grooming her as one's own agent doesn't help here, either. For pretty much anyone looking from a side this appears very much like simple power grab.

So far Brigitte's only loyal friend at court seems to be He'Thar (and possibly Deborah), whose bollocking of her other supposed friends is completely on point.

Yeah, i really liked that scene with He'Thar calling the others out over their behavior, rather than everyone just shrugging and accepting the newcomer as a replacement as if it was the most natural thing when your friend goes missing. Characters having their own, varying views on the situation is nice.

But it became clear that any Spymaster who couldn't figure out what had happened to the Princess must be completely incompetent.

So, i don't really want to kick Jonquil while she's down, but... i'm afraid that even in the current version she still comes across as completely incompetent. This has mostly to do with how the actual villains, people she's supposed to discover and catch, have been effortlessly running circles around her for years -- her best friend the queen gets poisoned under her very nose, and she never thinks anything of it. Then they apparently start to poison the king to distract her from discovering their wrongdoings... and it is absolutely working.

The way she handles the whole thing with Brigitte only adds to this impression. As does seeing her rather use her spy tools to peep on naked masturbating girls than surveil potential criminals who are in the meantime quite literally twirling mustaches and evilly laughing while they discuss their deals under her nose. (granted, the latter isn't as hot, so given it's a porn game, it's kind of understandable. Still, it doesn't help)

Honestly, at this point the only explanation that makes sense is that the late queen was an idiot -- evidenced by how she thinks it's a great idea to confront the main villain without even telling anyone about her discovery and while her husband is away, and then just leave him be with declaration he's going to be dealt with later. So, if someone this dumb picked her friend for the spymaster and then supposedly taught her the craft, it'd be perfectly natural for the spymaster to be incompetent and unsuited for her job, the way she apparently is. It's the blind leading the blind, so to speak.

To be fair, having the spymaster be someone incompetent and making dumb decisions as part of the story is fine, and i don't think it needs to be turned into a comedy. She can very well be some sort of well-meaning but completely out of her depth character, almost a tragic figure in a way. I just want this sort of setup to have a logical conclusion, if that's the case, at least as an option.

(and that conclusion isn't to pat her on the head and give her a raise)

On the other hand she's able to track down Brigitte and get her operative deeply embedded very quickly and with no apparent effort, which suggests that she can be efficient when she wants to. She's just not interested enough to make the effort when it comes to preventing conspiracies against the crown rather than orchestrating her own.
