Unless any of you guys here are a family member, friend or or actually know him personally then yes this is based on nothing and is just weird. (by knowing him im not talking about oh he responded to me in a dm or email, but actually know him)
Still, pretty weird to abandon a game before the final boss's second phase or the ending. I still think its more likely he's dealing with some real world, potentially legal problems than him being dead.

Those are axles. You need to connect the correct ones to open the blocked gate. Try following where each one go, so you undestand which ones to connect and which ones don't.
I haven't playerd this game in a while, but I recall you push a lever/button next to an axle and it moves. You must move the correct ones so they connect each other (must touch each other). Once those are connected, go back to the gate and push the lever/button next to it. If it doesn't open, check the axles again.
This game completes 98% but that 2% is very important since you will never see an ending since the creator was captured by a group of sadistic maids where he will never return
