So I find it kinda weird that his parents died in the same accident. From what I have seen most divorced couples don't usually spend much time together or even talk to much to each other anymore.

I think he just used the wrong word. From reading this, there are a few times that I've thought English is not this creator's native language. I'm assuming it's supposed to be adopted mother, but somehow his native tongue translates it to stepmom. Also, him living with his Uncle for some time after the accident and then living with his "stepmom" doesn't make sense - you'd immediately live with your stepmom if she were it already.
