The problem though it hurts people looking for what they actually are seeking. It also teaches people new to it incorrect terms

While there isn't really anything in the game to prove definitively whether Laura (the protaganist) is trans or an actual futa, I think its easy enough in this case to just let it be what you imagine it to be.

That said, I otherwise do agree with you. Futa and trans are two distinctly different, if visually similar, things. And while a lot of people don't care either way, and thus really shouldn't have a say in the issue, there are those of us out there with distinct inclinations towards the nuances of one or the other, at which point the distinction becomes rather important. It bothers me to no end that futa is used as a blanket term these days to describe anything feminine with a dick, as it not only corrupts its original meaning, but it makes searching within that specific niche rather agitating at times. And I will moan about it till the end of time that futa/trans is a unified tag.

Nah Laura is indeed a futanari and Umbrelloid (the writer of the game) states this in the Bio of Laura.
