for me it works only when I wait at a different location than Michelle's house until 8pm (or later), then go to Michelle's house and use the gate.

It's a bug, normally it's a bug that can be fixed if you go out the door and come back in, but I'm not sure if it's save at the right time. Because you can't come back at that moment either.
