I like them to have gameplay if the gameplay is good. Half the time though it feels like an armchair developer who keeps going "here is how I would do this" actually got a chance to do this . . . and it is either boring or actively bad.
Now with SoC I wouldn't actually say the gameplay is boring or bad. I just think it is half-baked. I know what I'd like but I am not a game dev so I don't think my choices would do better.
Also I think if you condensed SoC into a Visual Novel it would be more like "Pick what routes you like and then try to guess what choices are the right ones; bad choices either give you a bad end or just don't give you any content" which is quite common with VNs and imo is bad design; every choice should lead to something.
