Nah it's both - the AI backgrounds look like garbage - blurry mess.
And that's coming from someone who uses AI every day. It's low effort.
I'm not sure the Characters are AI actually - The ones I looked at don't look like AI from a pixel / palette perspective.
Reminder: The artist behind Karryn's Prison has been under attack for a year for allegedly using AI - the /art reddit has been banning people left and right only to be proven wrong over and over with live video evidence of someone drawing an image on camera.
The "it feels like AI" is very subjective. Sometimes artists just do weird things that are wrong or we hallucinate AI when an image looks like something we've seen AI do a lot.
Samdoesart style has been completely butchered by AI since he was such a popular artist to have his art ripped off. If I ever see samdoesart's style and it's not in his portfolio - I (wrongly) assume it's AI always now.

This game is filled with low quality blurry bad AI art - but the characters I checked didn't seem like AI to me. The dev either traced / cleaned them / drew them / commissioned them (feodosiy?).
Hard to be sure because they are being so vague / elusive on their AI usage.

So based on the games i saw made by this dev were all from max 2022 idk if made anything else between 2022-2024, if you check his art you can see its handmade, there minimal mistakes in the art, you can also notice a difference on the colour pallete, the change of artstyle.
I understand its possible the improvement but same time something is fishy on the inconsistency and how it resembles AI, my best bet since i tried to search if he had a timelapse or wip found none, he could be possibily using Ai for posing and then produces his pieces based on that Ai, if he uses Ai to help him produce its own stuff that he creates with own hands then fine by me, now if he does same type of sht like Taffy tales dev does then he has a problem.
I understand some artists been victims of the movement against Ai, some artist were hit when they were legit, this people who would go after these artist accusing them would defend the Ai pieces, for example Milda Sento dev of My daily live of countryside, was hit also when it changed the artstyle, but milda did a timelapse to show the process to shut those users but still some come and accuse, for example i have a few pixelartists that also been hit by ai accusations they have to go over and do a timelapse to get rid of accusations otherwise they will be out of jobs.

My point is that this is very speculative and not really evidence that proves anything.
If you look at the images of the game - the backgrounds and icons are very clearly bad AI based on the noise / pixel distribution - the character artwork that I looked at - didn't seem to follow that same pattern.
They either did a better job hiding it or traced it or drew it. I can't know for sure so it's just speculation.
Mensh's older art was not AI generated or assisted, but sometime around when he switched to this Part 1 and Part 2 plan it definitely started being incorporated in his work. I was a huge fan of the original game and had been following it for a while, even joined the patreon for a while (gasp) so I was very familar with his style and noticed the changes immediately, mostly in part 2. I haven't really gone back and played through all of the later old content as updates became rarer and I lost interest in the project, but when part 2 appeared suddenly updates sped up.

Wow, that's a brutal change! I know it's explained, but this change in graphics... The characters are completely different and there are only big breasts, it's a bit of a shame. After that, the story is very cool, I'm still looking forward to the sequel. I take a lot of time because my English is not great and I translate slowly, but it's a pleasure. Good luck and thank you for having fun.
