Shards of Her - DEVLog February

Hey there, this will be quite a long read, I think. I hope I don't bore you to Death

First off, with this update, I'll start making some changes for the full release of the game, including core updates that will be announced and implemented, and so on.

Now, the game will be updated to version 0.4, meaning we're now in ACT 4. I'll slowly update the UI/UX of the game. I’ve already started working on it, but I won’t make it available until I’m sure everything works properly.

Some things have been moved from where they were before, and a new menu has been introduced where you can find all the in-game lore, including character stories, major locations of importance, items, and more.

By the end of this, I’ll also share a few previews from the next update!

So, let's start by introducing the CODEX Menu, which features several sub-menus, including Characters (previously moved from the Extra tab), Realms, The Shards, Astrology, and Timeline.

For now, these are the main sub-menus available in the CODEX Menu. Two more are in development, but they will be introduced later, once the Aethral language begins to play a bigger role, its origins and why some beings in the current world still use it.

Plus, Gallery function is in work.

Now, let's go over the menus and see what we can find there, in the order they appear from left to right

Characters

I'm sure most of you are familiar with this menu, or at least, I hope so, haha. Anyway, it has received an update! Since the cast of characters is growing and new ones are being introduced, I’ve expanded the list. You can now scroll through it or use the mouse to navigate.

Some characters won’t be available right from the start; you’ll need to meet them and interact with them through actions, conversations, or scenes first. Their individual pages have also been updated—for example, Neith's page, as shown below.

Most character biographies have been updated and improved. In some cases, if the player discovers new information about a specific character, their page will be updated accordingly.

You’ll also notice tags indicating their superpowers, hovering over them will display a short description of each ability.

Additionally, there’s a special row for Origins and Race. Origins refers to when or where the character was born, while Race is self-explanatory.

On the right side of the menu, you’ll find Character Variants. This is where alternate appearances, special outfits, or any other visual differences for a character will be displayed. If a character has another look, you can check it out here. (This is unrelated to the Shadow Realm content.)

Realms
Here, you'll find the locations from the game, especially those important to the story and lore. Each location comes with a description, and in some cases, additional lore details about the place.
For now, this feature is limited to viewing locations, but an exploration feature is currently in development.

So, be sure to check them out!

The Shards

The game has always been about the Shards, right? Well, things are finally starting to come together, and this addition was necessary. As you discover Shards, they will appear here, and you’ll be notified via a notification. The first one will be introduced in the next update, so, here we go!

Each Shard’s page will provide details such as its name, origins, a short story, and more. This information will also be updated if the player uncovers new details.

Astrology

This is an early design, but it covers the basics.Astrologywill play a significant role in the game as we progress, which is why you're getting an introduction to it now. At the moment, you can see the months and their corresponding zodiac signs in each box.

For example,Veri Kres(the equivalent of January) and its zodiac sign,Krathi Neka, are both written in the Aethral Language.

Hovering over the months, will mostly reveal if any of the important characters were born in that month.

More details will be revealed as the game develops!

Timeline

TheTimeline has received some minor adjustments and changes. As you progress through the game and major events occur, they will be added to the timeline. More features will be introduced here, but those will be revealed later.

Now, these are the major changes, aside from dialogue fixes, visual improvements, and other adjustments. Additionally, whenever you discover something new or an entry in theCODEXis updated, you’ll receive a notification. Meet a new character? Done, you'll get a notification about a new entry inCODEX Characters. The same applies to other sections.

There are also a few additional things coming in the next update, beyond just story content.
  • New Characters
  • Voice Overs for Narration (the older content is not fully updated yet, will be as the game progress)
  • Script/Dialogue/Visual Fixes (all over the game)
  • Story Fixes (there were a few story inconsistencies, which are now fixed)
  • New Achievements
  • New Animations
Additionally, translation for Chinese and Japanese has begun! I can't provide an ETA yet, but I'm working on getting it done as soon as possible.
Ah, and yes, some SFW previews from the next update, this time from game, I hope you like them! The NSFW ones will be private as they can't be public.

I remember playing the 1st release way back when (and only the first release). Did the English ever improve?

How many hours of content does the game currently have?
Depends entirely on your reading speed and how much exactly you actually want to comprehend the story, read the lore blah blah.

I would definitely be paying attention to the story, and I generally like to take my time, especially if there's good music that sets the mood. Would you say it has at least 10 hours given this?

I would say less than that though never actually counted, really don't see the point. It's barely started really.

That's a shame. I saw someone mention it in a subreddit. I probably won't try it, then.
Then the shame is on you. 98% of VN's are not that long. Do you only watch films over 3 hours long? Read books over 2k pages?

But you do you at the end of the day, but you're missing out.

Why would I waste my time on a game with hardly any content? Lol. Thanks for the info though

Honestly it's less the amount of content but rather the frequency of updates. There's simply to much time between release for me to believe this will ever be finished.

Here we go with another DEVLog, probably the last one before the release of the next update. I'm taking my time to set everything up right and make it seamless for the next ones. I know it takes some time, but I'm trying to deliver a flawless story out there and provide a great experience for everyone.

Now, let's delve into this, and let me present a few things to you, starting from the Prologue up to ACT IV, highlighting the changes and the additional stuff.

PROLOGUE - Veil of Illusion

Some minor changes were made to the dialogue and its visuals. The narrator of the Prologue has been changed, and later in ACT IV we'll find out who it is.

1744401925086.png

Hemera also received some visual updates, reflecting her status back then. Now, later... well, we all know how the story turns out.

1744401940417.png

There are some other changes planned for the Prologue, but those aren't meant to be shown just yet, and they'll only be unlocked after a specific point in the story.

ACT I - Awakening

Now, some story inconsistencies have been fixed, dialogue has been rewritten in some cases, and spellchecks have been done overall. Plus, there are visual changes in some instances, and a new character is introduced towards the end of the ACT.

1744401956491.png

A new scene has been introduced before MC heads to Omikami's Hideout. This character will appear again later in the game, but with a catch. So, right now the scene doesn't hold important meaning for the story, but it will later.

1744401971974.png

The vision scene between Aethra and Dies has been enhanced, and their conversation has been improved as well./

1744402022448.png

Now, towards the end of ACT I, during the narration of a version of War of Shadow, we're introduced to a new character. The whole scene is tied to ACT IV, so I won't say more to avoid spoilers.

ACT II - Echoes

Visually speaking, this ACT wasn't touched much because I already kind of like how it is. However, some changes will be made to it later, especially when MC wakes up and has to choose between calling for Hemera or Omikami, but that's on the TBD list for now.

1744402036289.png

The vision scene has been visually enhanced for both Aethra and MC.

ACT III - Reckoning

This ACT ends, and now we're in the next phase where things are finally starting to get serious, story-wise. Everything starts to connect, linking past, present, and future events, and we finally find out the full story behind Echo's actions and how she was time itself for a while...

New characters make their appearance, and some leave the scene... it's all starting to connect. And the consequences of past events will start to feel real...

1744402054112.png

And now, we'll delve into ACT IV... it's up to you to discover what's happening and where the story is going...

Now, regarding the other changes I mentioned before, starting from ACT IV, whenever you discover new things, meet new characters, find new Shards... or when something major happens, they will be added to the CODEX Menu. Let's go over it.

The Shards menu got a little overdone since the last design. I wanted to fully animate the buttons, but even with only two of them unlocked, it started to lag. I guess it's due to the engine, so I left them as static images, but you'll get an animated version of each once you open its page.

1744402068973.png

I don't necessarily consider this a spoiler, but right now two Shards can be found. The rest... well, that's up to you to find. One of them has been in plain sight since the start of the game

As you can see, the page will hold all of the Shards. Each one, as already stated in the game, is based on one of the seven sins and has its own story behind it, explained once you open its page.

1744402085698.png

If you've paid attention to the story, you'll notice how each Shard is somehow tied to its current holder, or whoever found it. And how it affected them, or whether it did at all, depends.

Regarding the Timeline, whenever something major happens or has happened and you've just found some new information about it, it'll get updated. For example, the Shards of Her event on the current timeline will be updated in ACT IV because of the things you find out.

And each ACT has its own page which will hold the major events that happened. If an event is too big, it'll have its own section apart from the ACT's own page. As you can see below, we have the section for ACT I - Awakening fully updated. This page, with all that information, only updates once you've finished ACT I; otherwise, you get the initial description without the details of what happened.

1744402101484.png

You can scroll or drag through it to see everything that has happened as we continue forward.

1744402117462.png

As you can see in this image, in the upper right corner, a notification pops up whenever something new is updated or added to the CODEX Menu, so you'll always know. You can check it for more lore information about whatever it is. In the image above, we have the default entry for ACT I - Awakening in the Timeline section of the CODEX Menu.

1744402131443.png

"They survived one Dawn, hoping for peace... They should have prayed the dawn never came again."

The same goes for whenever you meet a new character, find another Shard, or discover a new location; each one comes with its own story.

The STEAM page for the game will be updated once the release is complete and live.

Now, here are the patch notes so far...

You can scroll or drag through it to see everything that has happened as we continue forward.

"They survived one Dawn, hoping for peace... They should have prayed the dawn never came again."

The same goes for whenever you meet a new character, find another Shard, or discover a new location; each one comes with its own story.

"When the Tempest's fragments sing, and the Reaper begins its harvest... what hope remains? May the gods of creation have mercy, for their world teeters on oblivion."
