This past week I was doing more work on the images and code for the some overlays to go with the scenes for memories and dreams. I created some particles and fog that are partially visible and move around the screen while the image itself zooms in. For this memory I also added an image of your character as a child that faded into view. I am still working on that part as I am not sure I like how it turned out. I might try having the scene image fade to black and then fade in a partially visible image of you a child. Or maybe fade from the images of your character now into images of him as a child for the memory with the particle effects over that instead. Overlaying the two makes it harder to see. It is a tricky scene because while you are having a traumatic flashback, other things are happening around you. So we will be switching back and forth between you and your memory and the events happening now. I created custom screens for the memory fog and particles so that I can turn them on and off depending on what images are on the screen. This way the hazy memory fog will not show during the events happening in real time. It is still a work in progress, but it seems promising.

When I was not working on story renders for the memory scene I was also updating the story script with the dialogue for some of the scenes I had not added into the final game build yet. Much of this was focused on Branson's path since I had paused some of that work to ensure I could finish all the Damerek scenes and images. The amount of variation between the two paths is starting to rear it's ugly head. Branson and Damerek both have their own paths and the Branson scene split up with more variation on top of that. Much of this is due to the choices you made for Branson during his previous flashback scenes causing scenes to have 2 or 3 different versions depending on your choices. Without all of the story dialogue added to the game files for Branson, his paths is already about 1500 lines of code longer than the Damerek path. I am not sure if this will translate into a longer playtime for his path, but the game story is still growing and it is getting very fat.

I had estimated that the story script would be close to 130,000 words once this update was released. I am still adding story dialogue into the script as I complete the scenes and currently I am over 120,000 words with several of the large scenes not part of that word count. It has been a lot to write, but it give you all a good deal of content to play through. Especially if you have more than 1 save or like to try out different and choices.

That is all I have for this week's update. I have a mountain of work ahead of me, but I am trying to use all the free time I have to keep at it. I wish you all a great weekend and stay safe!
Thank you.

This past week I was busy rendering and writing as I was working on updating scenes that still needed their remaining images or dialogue completed. Towards the end of the story in this release both Kaela and Elwyn get their own little splits in the story. I was able to wrap on the remaining dialogue and images needed for Elwyn's versions of the scenes.

The mini paths for Elwyn and Kaela are part of one ending so depending on which one you end up on, they both will lead to the same ending. Each path will grant some relationship points and variables for each of the women.

I worked on adding renders for the Branson path since some of the scenes for that path in the village still needed their remaining images created. Here we see that your arrival in town has not gone unnoticed.

One of the random encounters and some other scenes I have planned requires a farm with barns and outbuildings. I had not found too many buildings that fit with the medieval style I wanted for Daz. A recent had caught my eye that seemed like it would work perfectly for what I have planned. It allows you to create farms and villages in Unreal and comes with a wide variety of building assets. I grabbed it since it was on a sale right now and I am planning to create the farm houses and barns I need in Unreal and then export them into Daz. There are many other scenes where buildings like this will be needed so I am hoping to get some good use out of the wide variety of walls and roofs to create some unique designs.

And finally, I compiled a test build for release 0.4.0 and have released it for the Pathfinder tier patrons. I will hopefully get some feedback soon as they have a chance to play through the content.

That should wrap up this weeks update. I hope you all have a great weekend and than you again for all your support!

This first round of playtesting has gone well. So far no reported errors so it seems that all the new updates are still playing nicely with previous saves. I am working on adjusting a couple scene transitions to improve the flow of the dialogue and story when switching to a specific scene that was mentioned by testers.

Outside of playtesting I have continued work on posing and rendering the remaining images for the larger ending scenes. These are some of the scenes for the large fight scene I have mentioned and is part of one of the endings this release will have. I purchased a new pose packs and have been doing some research into sword fighting to try and get the movements to seem more realistic. It has taken some time due to all the adjustments needed for all of the characters that are moving around in the scene.

I also have been updating the game with the new translations. I was working to ensure that all the menus have been translated. This means new image buttons with translated text and tool tips also. I had support for English, Spanish and Portuguese and have recently added French and Russian as well since it was requested.

i read from a poster in another thread that this game has a really good story.
can i ask before start playing, has the game reaches roughly halfway? or is it still in the introduction/groundwork phase?

very early stage if I recall correctly most of the introduction are probably out of the way , they were about to start the first real plot point in the story.

It is the start of 4th of July weekend here in the states and at least where I live, it is going to be scorching hot. With the high temperatures I am sure everyone is going to be heading to the beach to enjoy some fun in the sun and cool off in the surf. I wish everyone a great holiday weekend so have some fun and stay safe!

If you supported the author, you would know how hard he works:

This week has been much of the same work as last week as I continue to work on a large fight scene for one of the endings this release. There is a lot of manual posing which can make things slow going. This is a fight that you can win or lose similar to the fight in the tavern at the beginning of the game. The outcome of this fight will take your story in two very different paths.
I have also been working on the translations for the game. I was able to finish up the French translation for all of the currently released content and have almost finished the Spanish as well. Russian requires a new font since the one I use in the main menus doesn't support it. Once I find a good replacement I will wrap up the images that require different languages. I wanted all of the image gallery buttons, achievements, in game hints and journal to be supported by the different languages. So there is some extra work there to add in alternate text for each languages as I work on a solution for those translations still.
That is all I have for this update. Lots of posing swords for rendering, so since the update was so short I will leave you with a recent image from the In Time series that I had posted on Discord. Just in case you had not had a chance to see it. Have a great weekend all and than you all for your support!

Shards of the Past 0.4.0 - Dev Update #64

This week I continued work on the different ending scenes for this release with work on posing renders and also some work on creating one of the remaining environments. Between the different main paths and then the smaller branches in those as well as scene variations based on choices and character relationships, there is quite a bit of ground to cover to make sure I don't forget any possible outcomes. One thing going in my favor is that while most of the entire update is two fully separate paths depending on if you are with Branson or Damerek, the final scenes for the ending I am working on now allows those paths to essentially share the most of the same dialogue and scene images. There will be slight variations depending on the path, but for the most part completing this scene will allow both paths to end in a similar spot. And it also makes less work for me not having to create a full set of renders for each path.

When I was not working on this ending scene I went back and update some more of the scenes with Qinara around the campfire before you venture into Castle Helmsworth. This is in addition to the images I created last week. The amount of variation depending on your choices during the scene on top of choices you made prior have created a very wide effect to the branching that takes place. I still have some extra images I need to create and dialogue I need to finish for this scene and a similar scene with Branson's path. Each path will give you a little insight into Qinara's childhood and past. I keep coming back to update and work on this scene as it continues to grow quite large.
The future of games with Adult Themes
Recently you might have seen talk of Steam making changes to their guidelines for the type of content they are publishing on their store. They also banned or retired a few adult games as a result of this. This came about because of guidelines put in place by their Payment processors like Mastercard and Visa. It has now come to who removed and delisted all adult games from their search engine in their store and have started banning some of those as well. They recently released a statement about this that stated is was due to pressure from their payment processors as well. There have been quite a few forum posts and videos online about this. There appear to be quite uncertain times and while I do not know what the future hold for my game or anyone else's, I hope that many of the creators whose games we enjoy will continue to be able to publish their content. If something were to happen that resulted in Shards of the Past being removed from Steam, Itch, SubscribeStar or Patreon I will make sure to maintain the as well as the I created for the game. This will give us a place to have access to the game build and continue to receive updates if the worst comes to pass.
That is all I have for this week. I want to thank everyone for their continued support and I hope you all have a great weekend!
P.S. Stone Fox Studios just released their final update for Chasing Sunsets. So if you have time this weekend and are looking for a game to play, give that one a try!
