I talked to the developer about this too. He just said that it's important to the story so he's not making it optional. Either his definition of lesbian is different from other people or he just doesn't care about breaking his earlier promises. The only way to keep this "optional" I guess is to just not do Cara's entire storyline.

How do you define optional? You can chose not to do Cara's quest line. It isn't important to the main story.
