You can make them produce money, xp or do nothing.

Besides what is said up there, knocking them up without a fertility potion is pretty random and it looks like in the next few updates, they will stick around the house when you do it. They still can make you money or XP but I have found that just playing the online blackjack game can earn you what you need to buy all the properties and then they earn you money too.

So I don't have my harem earning me money any longer, just XP or MP.

Props to the dev for working like a machine with consistent updates, even though I'd prefer less characters with deeper stories. It feels like some characters are included just to be included.
