You can get a good experience out of just playing Thistle's Route.
It's just that you will be missing out on all the scenes involving Capucine, and some of the background lore (Capucine's Route reveals a bit about why and how this invasion came to be).
While there is one Capucine ending that can only be completed after Thistle's Route, all Thistle Endings are availeable immediately.

Thankfully, the 'special enemies" she gets (slime, minotaur, and so on) have a chance of dropping a magic gem, so it's not quite a dead end.
It's a pain in the ass to get, but the mage outfit, the one that's on the mountain with the wind, gives her x2 magic power, which is pretty damn good.

The value of the Slave Outfit is your ability to scale. You can get it early, and level it up very easily and time efficiently. It turns a level 10 Capucine into an absolute monster because it gives stats rather than multipliers. This makes levelling up and getting everything else a breeze. Mage Outfit is good, but still leaves her vulnerable in hard fights.
Ah, my experience was that the special enemies unique to cap-chan's route give so much exp you instantly shoot really high, so multi were better than flats for me.
Also I just beat Thistle with cap-chan, and of course you have to make sure you are at full life at the end or she auto one shot you with her explode skill.

There is a way around that. You need to keep breaking her talismans until she gets mad, at which point she is no longer able to use the Explode skill. It takes a little while from what I remember, but is very achievable.
