Some Ren'Py Games won't open

For both, I am seeing the renpy-installer, rather than direct game launching
The installer is stuck at 100% and is also throwing an error box -but without any messages in it.

WTF is that?

Downloaded Wifey's, tried, got a normal Ren'Py without weird installer that have nothing to do there...
Took a quick look at the code, nothing seem suspicious...

This too isn't normal.

The first line should be "Set script version to: (8, 4, 1)"; do not remove the "script_version.txt" file, it's important.

You shouldn't have the second line. And I mean you shouldn't at all have that line.

As for script.rpy:133, it's:

        )

There's no reason for this to take 10 seconds, so I guess that it's at that moment that you got the installer thing.


BUT anyway there's no renpy installer thing, it do not exist, it's not part of Ren'Py.
Plus, there's just no way that you get a Windows dialog box from Ren'Py; well, strictly speaking there's way, but even the most insane Ren'Py dev wasn't insane enough to rely on the Win32 library and do this shit.

So, that "installer" window that you get is NOT part of the game... There's something else that is started in parallel of Ren'Py (since it wrote in the log.txt file and clearly slowed down Ren'Py Init.


What version have you downloaded and from what host?
What file have you double clicked on to launch the game?

Yup bad actors on Itch using it for a while, thought it eventually stopped, but I guess the old post there can still be found (if the game wasn't fully nuked by google search. Was always the same course of action, copy a game from here taht doesn't have an Itch page, make the page look nice and legit and then offer a Pixeldrain link wiht an "Renpy Installer" lol

Or it was an ad? But either way that aint legit. taperedmouse Please prviode where you got that from, also change PW on a different device.

Edit, said stopped and just found one a bit ago. FFS. Its not a renpy game this time tho. I don't really have the time atm to check most new games on Itch tho.

Yes. First change the most important passwords from your phone.
then try to safe everything from the pc you need and then reinstall windows.

Yup, I did try to check up on it. But alas.
And when i saw that it was an installer, i thought the small size was justified

There are almost no installers on this website. We try and have everything download unpack play.
especially renpy, rpgm, unity, unreal, html.
ther might be some in between where installing is necessary but those should be marked and are mostly ISO’s.
Also a good tip is you can actually look into the files if there is pixeldrain present like you showed above so you know what you can expect.
