In this case, it all seems pretty clear. We’re watching a kinky dev struggle with the fact that he has desires but feels ashamed of them. It’s in his username — DignifiedPerversion — and it’s in the lecturing tone from the very first scenes; it’s in the very vanilla activities the protag engages in: “I have total control over this woman’s mind! Why don’t I [rubs hands together gleefully] HAVE SEX WITH HER!” It’s there when the female demon takes control of the girls; in contrast to our hero’s GENTLER, KINDER BDSM, the demon chick puts the ladies in heavy bondage, and even (gasp!) leaves bruises on their butts! All of this is WRONG, the Dev thinks; the developer thinks everything must be kept mild, because even a touch of edginess would cross his personal delicate line between “dignified perversion” and demonic abuse.
It's so weird how many devs seem to get hung up with that. One would think someone willing to develop fetish porn games already have their feelings on the matter sorted out. I mean, people seem desperate to try to justify why they enjoy those fetishes in the games themselves, which, as they're geared to a fetishistic audience, will often just cause disconnect. People need to make peace with the fact that erotic fantasies are just that, fantasies, and that they enjoying non-consensual erotic play says absolutely nothing about their morals or beliefs in day-to-day life.
One game that comes to mind that really fucked itself with this is The Gift. The original version and the first part of the remake were fun mind control games that were all about slowly changing the girls mindset over various interactions until the point they willingly become sex slaves. Then in a very sudden and jarring manner the game starts bending itself backwards to justify the protagonist's actions and how much he really loves the girls and that his brainwashing is not really brainwashing because he is making their lives better and from there on the mind control aspect is treated in the most unsexy way possible, so much so that a few people ended up liking the villain more for how ruthlessly he uses his powers over the girls.
There's also one game that has the protagonist use Brainwash of his own to "free" the girls from the villainess more evil brand of brainwashing and it is totally super consensual and wholesome. FFS.
Sorcery of Lust's ending feels very similar to those examples, both in the last chapter and the epilogue. Though it's still not as insulting.
Also, how common it is for devs of games that are, all things considered, rather tame to freak out and try to write in all these justifications almost like they're afraid of being called perverts or something just shows how the western erotic games scene is still doing baby steps and really has a long way ahead of itself before being anything really worthwhile.
I mean, this need to emphasize how "morally justified" fucking mind control of all things actually is looks just laughable when you compare with the genre in Japan which tends to fully acknowledge that the protagonist is turning the girls into little more than sex toys for entirely selfish and twisted reasons, yet doesn't try to make a pity party out of it.
I'm sorry about all this venting and I realize it's not 100% related to this game's discussion but it's just so frustrating to have this happen again and again.
