Not sure whether you have acquired Nimhe yet (the Hacker). Look at Iltari Entertainment district at 21-22:00.
Nimhe + Botlab unlock access to the Pirate base, your Chief Engineer and all the rest.

I designed the first Star system to be a bit of a Tutorial for the early game mechanics, so I am always interested to hear where players get hung up in the early stages. Can you let me know whether the quest hints on the quests page are not helpful enough in this early stage?

lol, didn't know there was even a 'quest page' I've seen quests come up but sort of remembered or fallen over what was needed.
I have nobody yet except for T'Ris and 'V' lurking somewhere (and no idea how to finalise her addition to the crew).
'Botlab'...is that the lab on MC's ship? I have that and I've opened up the crates that I've picked up so far, but it does say that I need a specialist to use the lab, same for a lot of things.
I'll check in the Entertainment lounge at the times you said...I vaguely remember something being said about going somewhere late, but as I said I am not even sure where the quest page is or even if that would turn up there.

well I found Nimhe but she told me to get lost...so not clear what to do as the first mention of her in the WT is 'With Nimhe onboard,...' No indication where to find her (though I got that now) or how to get her to join up...all in all, as a 'walkthrough' it just doesn't work

Start building bots. Bots lead to the unlocking of the pirate base, which also leads to the unlocking of weapons, which leads to bounty missions (from which you can get tons of AI Cores), the ability to raid the precursor junkyard, and the entire rest of the story.

but bot building needs someone to do that....right? I have plenty of parts

Got to the end of the game, have to say for a non-porn game and something I initially thought would be meh I was blown away. Sunk a LOT of free time into this, working through missions and enjoyed the more revealing images of the crew as I progressed. A bit grindy, but reminded me a lot of some merchant games where you need to balance profit on materials and trade routes. Very fun. Awesome stuff.

Did notice that early on I was given options to do trade missions to Abydos around the time of the bot collective, but wasn't able to complete the missions as clicking on the planet just brought up bot collective scans, unless the goal was to click on the moons - was long past it by that time that I knew the moons were separate. Also had a few hundred million in the bank by then, so didn't go back to try again. More FYI.

...I'm honestly impressed that you managed to unlock the other decks before you even recruited Nimhe, because I didn't think that was possible. Okay, go to Iltari station and talk to the bartender. She'll tell you to talk to Nimhe, and give you a reference so that she'll give you the time of day. Nimhe will give you a small fetch quest to recruit her (you'll need some money for it; I think it's 50k plus you need to buy a certain ship component from Shady, but I don't remember off hand how much the ship component is). Once you've recruited Nimhe, you'll need to talk to her to tell her about the botlab, and then talk to her again once she's also in the botlab (Noon-3pm, at this point in the game) to get the "botlab Introduction" option in her dialog tree. That'll unlock bot construction.
