That's not the story I want to tell - I want to show someone start from nothing and climb his way up against all the odds (with a lot of jokes and molestation along the way ). An important part of that will be the stat-training part - where you take missions to improve your intelligence, strength and combat ability. That will include multiple situations where you'll be able to grow some balls (or not!)

I'm genuinely happy to be more of a niche game or a cult-classic if it means I get to tell the story that interests me Unless I lose all my patrons, that is - in which case I'll make my Plan B game called Horsecock McAwesome

Everyone is a loser when they join the military. Back when military service was still mandatory in my country, they used to say that the army made you a man.

Don't worry, you'll be less of a loser once you start your training. Even John Matrix was a loser when he joined the army, and see how he turned out (even though he lied when he said he'd kill Sully last).

I think the disconnect amounts to this:

It is quite clear that Ranli's game caters to an audience of extremely high-brow, intellectual, renaissance-man types (or woman, alien, demon, et al). For such a group of IRL monocle-wearing Horsecock McAwesomes (who are also very in touch with divinity), escapism demands a character whose experiences are radically different from our own. This satiates our collective lust for art and presents an opportunity to broaden our own ever-expanding horizons.

Hence, MC.

As for the priest, it seems you've dwelled on this figure perhaps moreso even than MC. If there's something you need to work through, you've found a very supportive thread of, primarily, neuropsychologist M.D.s (according to all the most recent research).
