Steam now requires ages verification for adult games.

Also, if this is UK-only (and other jurisdictions with similar laws), it means they are attempting to comply with the law.
This is UK-only for now.
Don't think for a second it's not gonna go overboard everywhere else, in time. Especially with Collective Shyte and paiment processors trying to turn the whole internet into a Good Christian Conservative landscape.

So effectively this amounts to a zero trust situation.

All online purchases should be stopped because we can't valid the person hitting "buy now" is that person, and all purchases must be accompanied by some sort of network connected ID scan to validate government issued ID and no other ID is allowed.

Amazon would need to stop, and so on and so on. Adult orders aren't any worse than someone spending money against the money holders wishes and will cause them financial harm and result in likely refund no more than a Steam buy as an adult or non-adult game.

The only allowed purchase would be in-person purchases following ID validation and approval.

I understand where you are coming from, but the end result is internet buying would need to be terminated.
It's a "guilty until all your personal informations have proven otherwise, if we feel like it" situation, really.
And those "verifications" are more and more handed off to third party companies using the garbage peddled by Peter Thiel. When it's not his Palantir straight up.

Do you have children? Because yes - for reasonable purchases
That very much depends on the country and culture. In my country, it is very much uncommon for parents to fork over their credit card that easily. Typically the adult will be the one making the purchase from their own computer if they deem it acceptable, not lend their kid their credit card.

Anyway.
The main issue isn't arguing in circle if it will lead to the end of online purchases or not : it won't, it generates too much money.
The issue is how much personal data you're forced to fork over constantly just because politicians and others pretend to want to "protect the kids" when they don't give a fuck. That's where the whole age verification/ID verification shit came from.

How would you recommend Steam verify age is over 18 for ADULT content?
Well, since it's a store and you've to pay to get the games they sells, sending, by postal letter, your family record book should be the obvious solution they used. /s

Also, if this is UK-only (and other jurisdictions with similar laws), it means they are attempting to comply with the law.
Lets be honest here, for near than to two decades, they didn't really cared to comply to the Law when it was none adult 18+ games, including for Germans users who have stricter restrictions. What made them move isn't that there's a law about this, but that the said law included sanctions heavy enough to serve as incentive.

Exactly, now they legally will have data and list of all the pervs
Yeah, because before this they didn't had the list of your game library...

Like you, my current email account is over 20 years old.
Hey, my current Steam account is over 18 years old...

For the people that say the same thing in every thread, if they already had all your info, they wouldn't be asking. This is an escalation. Also, it's the parent's job to do any of this. The government is incompetent, and the implementation of this stuff will reflect that. The social media site X was already handing your info to Israel with their implementation. I wonder if that was for our safety.

Of course they did, gov knows it all.
but this just makes it's way easier for them to deny "privacy" and restrict access, to block people to access something(Not talking about lewd, but in general).
If this is ok, then next will be restricting access to games with violence or crime.
Let's say the age required to play games is 18+, you can try to check that by credit card verification(even though majority of youth dont have credit cards), they will just use parent's card, Like they did before, nothing really changes.

But then what if there is a new bill to verify that a person is 13+ to play violent games, What then? submit gradecards? It will keep getting absurd. There is already laws that kids shouldn't play these games, but that responsibility is in the hands of the parents, not the gov.

And the most detrimental hit will be to the game devs due to increase in piracy, why would someone give personal data when they can just pirate the game for free, gives the individual incentive to pirate the game.

Both credit card and email age lack as acceptable age verification online, in my opinion. just like an old t shirt, it has holes.
Exactly, this wont be effective at all, and will just boost piracy.
What's next? I need to give my ID to watch Lesbian Futa Mommies?

My problem is I don't have a credit card and I really don't want to get one, even though I've had an account with them for over 20 years

and when I contacted support about it

you get this, which I'm pretty sure is a cut and paste response

I understand your concern.

But for now, verification based on credit card ownership is the only path we can provide for age verification under the OSA.

As this is a new process, we are still gathering data on potential pain points for users and will take your feedback back to the team. We are sorry for the inconvenience this new requirement is causing for you and the rest of our UK users.

More information on this process can be found in our FAQ:

You would if you bought it at a Game Stop store in-person (or any rated M game or similar) if you appeared to possibly be too young.

Why should it be different simply because you got it online? It shouldn't.

People complaining about showing id to get ADULT products online are not being reasonable, logical, or even realistic. If they have ever bought alcohol, nicotine, or porn in-person and they looked a certain age or less --- they had to show id in most countries. Why the same people think they should not have to do the exact same online is ridiculous.

Steam might be trying to do everything it can to not require people to upload ID, due to the inherent risks of doing so.

I fully understand that, and I do appreciate it, I just wish they do something (which I'm sure they are trying to do) for those, that don't have one, don't want one, or can't get one

it just feels we're being punished for not having a credit card, and yes I realise, it sounds stupid as I type it

if only they would also accept Debit Cards, but that's not an option,
from what I heard, it WAS accepted by steam, but that was an error, so once they fixed it, it became just credit cards were allowed, and I'm not sure, but I think for those that verified with a debit card, now have to reverify with a credit card

Same can be said about being online in few years, "Talking in townsquare required you to show your face and identify, just show your ID to speak online now, Why the same people think they should not have to do the exact same online is ridiculous. "

I'm sure they're working on it. Though, the best case scenario is the UKs bullshit gets repealed once you guys get rid of that dictator.
I have no interest in politics, but, considering everything that happened because of this nonsense, they are literally handing over the votes to Reform UK, who have promised to repeal it if they're voted in.

It's an easy win, imo. Especially with... all the other things going on in the UK.

Totally agree... As anyone can see with Rap and Hard rock being banned from all music stores since more than three decades now, the worse will happen, and it will happen tomorrow... /s

It's really funny to follow this kind of threads when you've that, apparently marvel, called "memory".
One month ago zonies where complaining about the UK asking for more strong age check to access 18+ content. And now they blame Steam for its too weak age check, saying that they implemented it because of the UK...
For who wouldn't know better, it would really looks like the said zonies are just complaining for the pleasure to complain.

But then what if there is a new bill to verify that a person is 13+ to play violent games, What then?
Well, if one day it happen, then you should celebrate because, in most of the world the Law actually is that those games are 16+...

There is already laws that kids shouldn't play these games, but that responsibility is in the hands of the parents, not the gov.
Wow...
That parents should care about what they children do, I totally agree. But that the government shouldn't be the entity that ensure that the Law is respected, it's a big news...

[...] why would someone give personal data when they can just pirate the game for free, gives the individual incentive to pirate the game.
Once again, Steam is a store... that now ask for your card number before letting you access to some games.
Anyone who freak out because their card number is a private data that they don't want to share with Steam is missing something...

Everything Steam was doing was already legal and above board. Why is it that if aliens were to invade, we know some people would betray humanity to simp for the aliens? "Think of the tentacles."

google: uk law allows for debit cards for children, but you need to be 18+ to sign a credit agreement.

multiple european countries have official eid that could be extended past the current use cases as an alternative, in case it spreads to them.
