So I tried Derealization. I have actually played it more than a year ago and from what I recall I found it to be mostly enjoyable, save for the soapboxing bit from Gray that I thought was a bit cringe but still in-character for where it happens, and occasional stylistic mistake.

I'm also concerned the game might fall prey to remasteritis where the creator tries to make it into their perfect magnum opus so that it will get constantly changed with little to no plot progression. But it's definitely worth keeping a close eye on, for sure.
So, I had rather different reactions to _Derealization_ and -u4ia- -- although I think my impressions were rather biased by expectations. They were quite high for the former and very (probably overly) low for the latter.

I've now tried _Derealization_ twice... and failed to finish the current build on either occasion.

The trouble is not that I have any problem with the sister's past in porn... it could be an interesting story element, particularly if used to illuminate aspects of her character.

It's the MC... I find him to be dull, self-indulgent and irritating in roughly equal measure. As some readers of this thread may know, I'm hardly a self-inserter and usually enjoy playing flawed MCs... but this guy sets my teeth on edge for some reason. I want to like him and wanted to like the game... but I can't fathom why the MC's friends and LIs put up with his antics.

In contrast, I started playing -u4ia- with _extreme_ reluctance, largely due to my disappointment with _Leap of Faith_... an immensely promising game ruined by the dev's excessive ambition and lack of focus. I agree with Impenitent: if the dev had focused on Cece and one or two other LIs, LoF could have been a meaningful, deeply affecting narrative -- instead, it was a mess.

The first chapter of -u4ia- was good... very good... once you get past the (very) annoying opening dream sequence. The plot has a lot going on, but doesn't lose focus; the game mechanics are interesting; and there a are already a couple of choices that have meaningful consequences. I don't usually like free roam, but it is handled cleverly and adroitly. The game is a slickly produced number.

Then again... the first few chapters of _Leap of Faith_ were also quite good, so I remain wary of investing in -u4ia.

I haven't finished the first chapter of u4ia yet, but I liked it so far. It's quite different from leap of faith when it comes to it's characters from what i've seen. Conversations seem to have a little more punch to it here and there compared to his prior game. Also, in this AVN you can apparently become a

. At least I hope you can... Gotta read the rest of it before making a real judgment here...

As for the opening scene, I don't really care to be honest. It's like whatever to me.. What I personally didn't like about it was the build in slut check during their conversation.. "Do you do alot of those random hookups?" No, Never" .. It's just so dumb, sry.....

Anyways, my first impression is more positive than negative. Although, I was a little worried about the sandbox tag because when I think of sandbox I think of gameplay mechanics like this

which thankfully isn't the case here. You just have to prioritize what you're gonna do during those freeroams which is fine by me.

Yes, I'd say my impressions were similar... I'm wary because of the LoF experience but am trying to keep an open mind.

Like you, I think the semi-linear sandbox mechanic is appealing. In fact, it's probably fair to call it downright clever. In a way, it's a disguised branching choice mechanism that feels less binary than a simple dialogue choice.

There are several other clever mechanics like this, such as the embedded choice mechanism during makeout scenes... it initially seemed annoying, but I've warmed to it.

So... I'm trying not to get excited, given my priors, but it was a strong first chapter.

Darn it, I have to back away from my initial excitement about the game (u4ia). After my first run I was told by the game that I missed out on over 50% of it. All i've accomplished, at least I thought I did, was to become a

.But apparently you can't do that when you chose the "brains" personality, bummer. So I restarted and tried something different. I picked a random girl, Teagan in this case, and tried to get on her route. Well, turns out that the sandbox portion of the game is a bit more annoying than I thought. Apparently you have to go by trial and error in some cases to get some scenes and encounters, which is...unfortunate:p. Well, needless to say that I did not manage to , I don't even know what, to get on her route, lol. But what I did accomplish was seeing some of the other "routes" and what should say.. There are a couple of completely nonsensical lewd scenes in this game. I'm not gonna lie, it started to hurt my brain a little at some point. Like that blond chick at the club when you wait in line..., wtf?. I don't know, I guess the main story seems interesting?. A bit creepy i'd say. Like,

do you know that from a walkthrough / dialogues in the game or based on Ch.1 End summary? because f95zone's version has a bug. There's a new version on the patreon that fix that Ch 1 End Summary texts

Yeah, that might've been a bug. Although, the way I understood it was that I needed to have a "manly" response in one of the earlier conversations combined with that agreement to... spolier.... But I have no clue since I haven't spend that much time tryng to figure things out...

no it's just a text bug. You could still do Synne path even with Brains.

Yeah, similar with Leap of Faith, Drifty's game is more of the "choose which girl's path you want to read". You don't get everything, I guess the main path is relatively the same.

I felt really iffy palying Leap of Faith because what Cece need is definitely not a boyfriend in my opinion but even when I chose other person's path, the story is still ultimately about Cece, lol.

What I'm trying to say is, yeah you don't get to seea big portion of their renders on their game. I was trying Teagan's path just now, but then it accidentally pivoted into Anita's path and I just realized the scene on Anita's path has more effort than say, Geneva's path.

So yeah you don't get to see everything.

I like u4ia's gaming experience though. It's certainly way better than Leap of Faith. Leap of Faith's cellphone mechanic was really janky. I dislike it in the sense that it makes it kinda hard to replay the game by speedrun.

This game's "sandbox" elements are far better. The sandbox elements are basically "choose which girl's path you want to explore" anyway, so far. It's still simple.

Is it though?. Like the barkeeper lady for example. From my understanding there's like an event or something with her. But no matter what I do I don't get to witness it. I also can't compliment her which I guess has something to do with it. Maybe I need some specific perk or something.... What i'm trying to say is that it feels like you need to be strategic about things that you have no clue about. Which is, imo, not very fun..

Ahhh. the game tutorial told you to do "Perception" so i picked Perception and it spoonfeed you that "this is the time to check on Anita"

But also on Drifty's games, if you're not deliberately focusing yourself to be on Anita's path, yeah you could miss it that is fair to say. On Leap of Faith it was like that too, like, I still don't know how to give Holly's cigarette until now. It's the way they designed their game I think. Players missed things if they aren't really focusing, which doesn't lend itself well to speedrunning.

But u4ia is already way better than LoF on that aspect though. LoF is really janky wrt to speedrunning.

Oh, the compliment, just choose a beer or a whiskey. If you let her make mocktails for you, you don't get that option.

Which is, imo, not very fun..
But yeah this is a fair take. I didn't like LoF either as a game. The story just happen to hardcarry it.

I really want to see the MC ex's path on LoF but i can't bring myself to replay it due to how janky it is to speedrun, lol.
Maybe one day when i'm way freer wrt to time than now

Both Hillside and Chasing Sunsets drop the same week?
I know some of you guys are not with me on this, but to me, this is like Christmas and your birthday on the same day!
I'm a major _Hillside_ fan, despite the fact that it's cheesy, reductive, and the MC is a bit of a male power fantasy. At its worst, the game can be a bit like a lower quality episode of _The OC_ -- and I hate Dark Blue's stated intention to transform Emma into an LI. Gross AND creepy. But...
  • The MC's Gary Stu-esque qualities are leavened by his emotional infirmities. He has serious issues, and they humanize him. You can play him as a mensch.
  • Charlotte and Lucy are fantastic LIs. They are emotionally resonant and realistic. The teeth-gnashing by the usual suspects about the lack of sex between Charlotte and the MC to this point is glorious to behold!:ROFLMAO: (She is reluctant for a very good and well-established reason.)
  • Dark Blue understands that a kiss on the cheek can be more meaningful than acrobatic anal... it all depends who is kissing whom, and why.
  • The MC cannot make everyone happy... this is the opposite of a 'magic wang' harem game.
_Chasing Sunsets_ is a lovely game to look at, but it 'jumped the shark' for me (and jufot) a couple episodes ago. I'm not sure if I'll play the update.

THAT is something I would hate too! But I have been clinging to the hope that it hasn't happened yet.
The wholesomeness of MC's relationship with her, while still not being trivial, is such a refreshing contrast to a lot of the stuff here.

Exactly! I have been going through all sorts of emotions while playing, and even started reflecting on myself when I realized that I find it impossibly hard to reject Lucy, even though I really find Charlotte more attractive.
I realized that this actually parallells some real life episodes of my life.

I'm glad to see Derealization get some appreciation around here. With its twisty development cycle, I've found myself alternating wildly between hope and despair for the project. I was really excited about the game before the rework, but I started to half write it off as an art project with an eternally expanding beginning that would never actually reach a conclusion...or a midpoint. The last two updates have been really good, though, so I've swung back to the hope side. The next few releases will be huge as this will be Greenish Purple's chance to build some real momentum for the project and show us that he's now got his vision for the story figured out and that he can resist the urge to rework going forward.

I was actually at least initially quite skeptical of some of the changes the rework brought. It's not an understatement to say that GP went all in on Theia. She went from a figure from the MC's past to a constant presence in hallucinatory form and now she has more lines of dialogue than any of the non-PC "real" characters. Also, I felt like this particular MC's inner demons didn't really need to be represented visually like VNs tend to want to do -- we can see his anger flare up when things don't go his way or his tendency to run away when life gets complicated without needing Theia to personify his sickness.

I've come to appreciate T. more now, though. While it can be a little annoying to see Jake so involved in conversing with his faux ex-girlfriend that he ignores or alienates actual people, it's pretty damn real to portray mental illness as something that keeps you from connecting with others. As jufot mentioned, Theia also functions as the MC's conscience and she challenges him with plenty of much-needed feedback about his destructive patterns of behavior. It'll be interesting to see if the real Theia is alive and will make an appearance in the story at some point.

One thing I didn't mind is the reveal about Jilla's career in porn and like some of the other posters here I was bemused by the over-the-top reaction to it from the peanut gallery. While she didn't "have" to be a porn star, at least not up to this point in the story), I certainly don't think her past (or present) career is any reason for the MC to distance himself from her and I definitely feel it was another personal failure for him to rush to judgment and anger instead of showing some concern, support, and/or empathy for his sister. It's natural not to want your sister to be exposed and in the public eye that way, but to have that be the only reaction you feel isn't really caring about her as a person IMO. I also feel personally like it's not that strange to be a porn star in 2023. While Jilla did studio porn, I imagine there are people in my social circle who are on OnlyFans or post to /r/gonewild without me knowing about it. The world has changed, but F95zone always surprises me with how "conservative" many of its users really are at heart. Of course, they're conservatives who often/usually have no issue with incest so they tend to see Jilla as a potential love interest whereas I see her purely as a family member the MC will have a platonic relationship with.

It probably makes all the sense in the world to keep the MC out of relationships given the personal demons he has to contend with, but where's the fun in that? Still, I am planning to do at least one celibate run (though it probably won't really feel all that celibate because of Theia) because there's a good chance that that would be the wisest choice for Jake and everyone who comes into his orbit. I feel particularly wary of pairing the MC with anyone who isn't stable and is facing serious problems of their own because Jake is an incredibly shaky foundation to build a life around at this point in time. Even without Hildegardt's ace detective work, pursuing Sydney would still seem like a particularly risky proposition to me. It's practically inevitable that if they get closer there will come a time when she'll really need the MC and he won't be there for her. Maybe he'll run away again or be lost in conversation with Theia or just be hiding from the world. The potential consequences of that are terrifying and have already been chillingly foreshadowed.

On the other hand, maybe there's a risk to not being there for Sydney too. The default state for humanity is silence and indifference. It might be better to have someone imperfect and unsuitable reaching out to her than to have no one at all try. It's certainly not a given that Sydney who seems quite skilled at misdirection and secret-keeping has anyone else in her life who really cares or has any inkling of what her daily existence is really like.

It's very hard to say at this point who in the game is an actual LI and who is just there to add color to the world. If I could pick anyone, though, I'd choose to pair either Tammy, Jackson, or Delilah with the MC for different reasons. Tammy seems like a very stable, straightforward, and together person. I like that she has experience sharing her life with a difficult and neuroatypical person like her sister Tamika, and I like the way she openly showed genuine interest and attraction in Jake. Jackson (Chloe's mom) gives me earth mother and hippie type vibes and could I think be great for a hothead like our MC who struggles to control his emotions. She could get him into yoga, encourage him to meditate more, and just generally give him a very different perspective on life than he normally gets. Let's delay the MC becoming Chloe's stepdad for as long as possible, though, because I have serious doubts he's ready for that responsibility.

Delilah's a bit of a different case as she comes across as probably the most disconnected person in the game next to Jake. She's alone at the top and can barely even bring herself to pay attention to her underlings. However, she seems more distant than troubled. These qualities might not all seem terribly attractive all things being equal, but I think it could actually be great that Delilah with her personality might not be a very clingy or demanding girlfriend. The MC seems to want to run away when life gets too real or demanding so some distance might actually be a good thing. I may be making wild assumptions based on appearance here, but I would guess that there's a good chance that like any good Muscle Lady Boss she knows a good gym and could get Jake to start a new workout routine which could be good for him as well. Of course, all this does mean he'll be dating his boss...and that she'd be interested in him in the first place.

I don't think you know anyone who actually has their birthday on or near Christmas. Growing up, they usually didn't get double presents, they were just told that the presents they received were for both Christmas and birthday. ;)
