Couldn't devs just not have the mom as a LI to avoid this mess? The rare times I visit a guy protagonist game the biggest problems seem to come from "harem" fans and the pro/anti ntr crowds.

Right, but is that because players have come to expect incest content or because they assume every female character who's friendly with the MC has to be lewdable or feel a certain entitlement to? Maybe something else?
I could be way off and this could be confirmation bias, but when I play a game with a non-lewdable sister, then I catch myself thinking that I wish she were an LI, not because she's the sister, but because she's a great character. I'm trying my best not to be condescending, but maybe other players aren't that conscious about why they feel drawn to this character and link it to the incest kink instead of it being about her characterization and ingrained bond they already have to the MC?

Be based and just kill the MC's wifey in the prologue, when she's at the peak of her happiness. And when MC's daughter grow up a bit, kill her too.

Well, when there's a game about MMC living with his family without his father (dad's are non existent) it's expected that the game will have incest under the disguise of a step cest. Though, even though some games are clearly not written to have it, some players demand a patch to be included. So yes, also yes it's expected that every female character be a romantic option. What I wish is that there are more platonic relationships like within cousins and friends. Idk if I ever saw a male character having a female character only as a friend.

Imho, TMP is a must unless it's really not your thing. I mean, I have a few five-star games on my backlog too which I just can't bring myself to play, even though everyone cum just from the mention of a new update of those games.
What I like most about TMP is that it's a really adult game with adult characters.

I certainly don't understand the Incest drive here, but it's not just people growing fond of a compelling character. In Mortze's Star Wars game, we have a guy who got out of a bad situation by signing on as a crewmember on a ship captained by a woman. The captain is an LI in the official game. But despite the fact that the game made it extremely clear that MC and Captain had never met before, someone went and modified it to make her his sister. That's just dumb.

What bothers me is that expected is treated like required. The fact that it's expected just shows how many other options people have to play without trying to browbeat the dev into adding it. I mean "just helping the dev understand how to make a game more profitable."
