rendering computer capable to render hundreds of images during night isn't cheap and ofc there's rent, electricity, water,
...... to pay.
Yea apologies for not being clear; that was in response to your comment that people would have no incentive to pay. So I was trying to say that I wasn't suggesting projects become fully FOSS, with every component available. Just the codebase. And accordingly since renders r a significant part of games, then the concern of people having no incentive to pay is a nonissue. (Since it's hardly a game with just a few plain text files lol.) I should've been more explicit that I was suggesting partially "open source", eg Chromium vs Chrome

These games are visual novels, and graphical by nature. Try open sourcing a book or movie. It's an artistic project, and singular artistic visions are much stronger experientially than art by committee.
Yea exactly, that's why I previously suggested the main issue would probably be related to just reviewing all the PRs. Cuz there is a fine line between people fixing typos and grammatical errors (and preserving the singular artistic vision) and making subtle changes to dialogue etc (and thereby altering the singular artistic vision). Honestly that's prob an issue that editors often face.

Like I said tho, I often correct typos and such for my own sake and just wish there was a streamlined way to share them. Which is y I thought of open source cuz you could easily review and merge the changes. Currently, you'd have to send a bunch of files thru some messaging platform and the whole thing is super messy lol. Or alert the dev and just list all the typos and errors and put additional and unnecessary work on their plate

soon is earliest next august.
luckily he did that "steam rework"...after a year or so from the last regular update.
otherwise it would already qualify for "aboned" status...though rules here are quite flexible, some game threads get it after 3+ months, some after 18+ months and some arent getting it at all regardless of any condition they might have fulfilled....quite diversity, regardless of importance or not of "aboned" tag on some pirate site. :BootyTime:

Hi, coming back to discussing the game itself, I have a question. Is the fact that Davis appears sometimes and "talks" with the MC, a result of MC's PTSD due to the actions he incurred while on the service?? or what is the consensus (if any) opinion here?

Yes very much so, along with the betrayal, lost chances to talk...what he currently doing etc...I think (for me) the hallucination/image of him is just for us as players, though I suppose it's also possible the MC is 'seeing' this too.

Imo it's PTSD, survivor's guilt or just him speaking to himself while imagining he's talking to Davis (as in he made it his own way of dealing with issues).

Well then soon :)
I don't see a reason for someone to be happy about a good game having development problems.
We all lose if the game actually gets abandoned.

As for me, I don't think Stew actually abandoned the game, he is probably having some technical difficulties or some mental stuff or both.
What ever it is, I really hope he gets his shit together soon.

The MC and Elspeth have ptsd, Elspeth is doing therapy while the MC talks with his ghosts.

Game is not abandoned. STWA is running a little late because the testers have encountered issues with importing old saves as per his most recent post on Patreon.

And even though I'm sure sooner or later we'll get the usual trolls screaming about milking STEW has paused billing on patreon at the end of sept and he will keep it paused until the release is ready

also regarding the MC's PTSD -

Hey folks as noted in the last update Billing is paused until release is ready. Today we have just a couple of renders from the update as a very small token for your patience.

Update news is simple. We did manage to solve the transfer issue and we're back in business. So here's exactly how things are at the moment. I send the testers a build, they test, send fixes, I fix and then send a new build. That's where we'll be until release. It's tedious, but because somebody (that person is me) flew to close to the sun on potential variables there's a lot of things they have to contend with. But that's nobody's fault but my own so any fuckery lands at my feet.

Now recently I received a message from a Patron who was concerned about the update window and my status, and it's a valid concern/complaint to have. So I tried to put my thoughts together and message him back, and I decided I would also put a more group oriented version my response here, because I think that this individual is most likely not the only one with such feelings, so I should speak to everybody. It's a wall of text and I apologise for any grammar or formatting issues. Also I'd like to say here that this isn't a targeting of any individuals, it was a perfectly respectful and earnest inquiry and they gave me a good vehicle to articulate some thoughts I've been meaning to put to "paper" for a while. So we're doing it now.

The first query was on the Transfer code and how it was causing difficulty/delays so I'll try to explain my process on it. The reason the transfer issue put us at a brick wall was in the most naked term possible, if the code itself wasn't working, then the game would crash, not possible to test pathing, make sure renders are working ect. Hence the trouble. So the other option is to just scrap the transfer entirely, but that was a last resort for a similar reason. The original Unbroken file and code was growing too large and unruly and was beginning to crash itself, so the choice was made to do this to try to prevent such issues further down the line. Hence why the transfer exists. The hope was to solve a problem before it got bigger. There's every possibility I made the incorrect choice, but I thought it wiser to try and fix it now, then have the game brick itself for everybody later. That's about the least fluffy way I can explain my thought process.

The next part of the query, involved the size of the update/ time taken to make it. Though this is the largest update, they were correct that it's not something such as 3x the size as the previous one. As I mentioned in my update paragraph the general issue comes rather from the branching nature of the game. I'm rather open that I was a bit overambitious in my pathing early on, and much of this update is an attempt to streamline, again like the transfer as a preventative measure for the future, the streamline had to happen sooner or later and since I was already working on other back end stuff I tossed it on the pile as well.
A final point, though not explicitly asked, I thought might give some additional insight. As I've mentioned in previous posts I've been very creatively unhappy with the update as a whole throughout the process, there's been lots of parts that was not something I would have been proud or happy putting out to the public, there's been lots of revision and backstage changes as a result. There's no excuses or blame to assign besides to myself. Nobody died, I didn't go to the hospital or have some major life thing, I just had a creative struggle. And I want to put out out something that I'm happy with and that people will enjoy. I acknowledge the wait is frustrating and folks have every right to feel that way, it's completely valid to express concern. Additionally my update posting has not been up to snuff this cycle, no excuse for that, I've mentioned before when I don't feel like I have much new to say I don't want to waste time writing out something droll just to write something, time I feel more people would probably rather I was working on update stuff. But not being as engaged in the community is also a problem no doubt and when one individual is voicing concerns with it, there are no doubt others who feel similar, so I'll work on it, if anything just a check in and some additional sneak peeks even if I don't have anything I'd consider interesting to say. Along with that the only other thing I can do on my end is just get the update out, and pause billing which as I stated will continue being done until release is here. I'd also like to say this isn't meant as a "boohoo my dev life is so hard" Just trying to be open on the thought process, frankly if unhappiness at my work is my biggest problem in the world I think I've gotten off pretty lightly. Anyway, now I'm rambling, so I'm going to shut up here.

As always I want to thank you guys for your support. The fact that you still care enough about my story is honestly humbling, I'm exceedingly lucky to have everybody. I only hope to be worthy of such a wonderful community. I say it a lot, but it's because it's true. Anyway I hope you have a lovely week and stay safe. Oh and Happy Halloween.

Sláinte.
