Yeah, that's what bothering me about it as well.

I mean, no sexual content? OK, I'm cool with that. Not all stories benefit from having sex scenes.

Games without sexual content on f95zone? Cool! I appreciate good gameplay and good stories as much as a good sex scene, and a lot of these games and VNs belong to genres that are basically our usual fare anyway.

...but games with underwear shots, wetshirt scenes, and fullbody this-is-technically-not-nudity scenes - but no actual fucking, or even a bare nipple?

"Shit, or get off the pot" as the old saying goes. Ecchi stuff like this is only satisfying if you're like 13 and don't have access to anything with proper sexual content yet.
While this is by no means a new phenomenon, it wasn't always like this. These things do sell though, and fortunately there are doujins that can satisfy that crave. Well, for every 1 person who claims about the game not having sex, there are 10 people who claim about the sex scenes adding nothing or just being too much for them to handle (oh no, watching this will turn me into a pervert! what will my friends say! god is watching me masturbate!). Just like the idiots who read a NTR doujin and then go to the comment section to complain about how it was NTR and how people reading it should die. We love moralizing, the public feeds off catharsis. If fellow perverts try and shame other perverts, what hope is there for the general public that would put you to death for buying a doujin?

These things do sell though,
Well, duh - stuff like this mainly sells because it's marketed to teens. And to refer to my earlier point about the 13-year olds: teens love this sort of thing because this kind of immersive romance + ecchi stuff is the best thing they can get as long as they don't have access to anything with actual adult content.

Sometimes the writing is good enough that VNs like these attract a good number of adult fans as well - and Key certainly does have a good track record when it comes to that. But still; sex sells, and that's ultimately one of the main selling points of games like this.

and fortunately there are doujins that can satisfy that crave.
Reading a fanmade doujin just isn't the same, though. It breaks the immersion of the game.

That's just nonsense - anyone who would sincerely complain about actual adult content is also going to complain about any game that lays on the ecchi as thick as this.

I mean, let's get real here - content like some of the scenes in the previews is worksafe in name only. It's clearly intended to be sexual and titillating, and it's really not something that you'd want to get caught with by your boss or your mother. And in fact, if you're just playing VNs like this for the story, then too much of this only technically worksafe stuff can get grating pretty quickly.

If fellow perverts try and shame other perverts, what hope is there for the general public that would put you to death for buying a doujin?
I'm not trying to shame anyone. I'll admit that I'm complaining for a bit, but that's mainly about the weird fact that there's games that are technically worksafe but sometimes still feel like you're playing porn anyway.

A new Key game eh? They usually don't dissapoint but I'll wait for a little bit more spoilers first.

So how bad is the fanservice? I don't mind minor ones or if it's only a few times, but too much can just get in the way of the story. Although it depends how well it's implentend and how well it blends into the story. And this coming from a guy who faps to the most f-up porn sceneiros, but when I'm reading/watching a serious story, I don't want any of that crap.

I've always remember Key bieng pretty good about the fanservice though, so it's probably not a concern.

I agree with your comment about teens, but I think there is another audience of adult people who want the story but are turned off by ratings of actual adult content.

Sometimes the writing is good enough that VNs like these attract a good number of adult fans as well - and Key certainly does have a good track record when it comes to that. But still; sex sells, and that's ultimately one of the main selling points of games like this.
Of course sex sells, that's why everything in modern society is being sexualized. Its the easiest way to grab eyeballs. But you can't be too explicit about this stuff, people get turned off if its too direct. The west is not used to VN's either, its a new market. Then again, I doubt the japanese care about western market.

Reading a fanmade doujin just isn't the same, though. It breaks the immersion of the game.
Depends on the doujin in question. Some doujins directly incorporate story, or link themselves to it.

That's just nonsense - anyone who would sincerely complain about actual adult content is also going to complain about any game that lays on the ecchi as thick as this.
Nope. I have seen so many posts from people who complain about sex as if its inclusion tarnishes the game. And in some cases, these are legit complains - but the solution is not removing the H (which is just lost content) but adding some context for the H. Go outside of these forums, and no one complains about H scenes, because there just aren't many western people who play the kind of VN's you and I are used to.

True. I agree. But see my point about moralizing, and you will see that the issue is more than just this.

I'm not trying to shame anyone. I'll admit that I'm complaining for a bit, but that's mainly about the weird fact that there's games that are technically worksafe but sometimes still feel like you're playing porn anyway.
I wasn't talking about you. I was addressing a common behaviour called catharsis. You have a legitimate point, but some people just want to put themselves on a higher pedestal to feel better about themselves.

Its easy to write fanservice too, so the writers win as well.

THIS!
THIS!
FUCKING THIS!
Is like when i find some softporn ecchi manga with all kind of situations, teasing, flirting, sexual tension, and some time even sexual situations. But for some strange reason no nipples allowed.
What's the point. Once they go that far anatomically correct nudity is the least concern. The title is blatantly aimed at being sexual in nature, many time is basically censored porn, so what's the point of playing pretend by hiding nudity. And the sexual tension between the characters become so thick and oppressive that the reader at that point is just "for fuck sake, just fuck already!"

Softcore just probably wont be your thing then. Some people find it more exciting to not see the actual nipple or vagina, but the imagination of what they could look like naked. Once they lose the "mystery" then they feel the character or person becomes like every other model. Although from what I hear about this company, the quality is probably going to be good

Given this is destined to be another thread filled with complaints about the no sexual content tag when clearly there is stuff that could be defined as sexual content I hereby propose a new tag for games such as this - "Fanservice without fucking".
Technically the "no sexual content tag" does the job, but I think there should be a difference between "nothing sexual whatsoever" and "softcore porn", to avoid some confusion

Technically you're right but given the bitching happens in every thread that has the no sexual content tag regardless of the amount of nudity a game has clearly in practice it doesn't.

No amount of tagging proofs against whiny idiots.

Seriously this forum is only too often an epitome of this:

It is even funnier that people cry about not being able to rub one out over a game they didn't have to pay for. There are plenty of other games out there, and even more videos they could watch instead.

They know that complaining isn't going to do anything for them, they just want to be acknowledged.

The game is good, there's some fanservice that actually make sense and making it good
but hot damn the game making me cry like a little bitch

well, there's no use bitching about no sexual content in this one. This a VN. Not an eroge. A Key studios VN, at that. They never made an h-scene. Nor an eroge. Just VNs that pretty much changed the landscape in anime and set a new standard for VNs back in the day. Stuff like clannad, rewrite, little busters. Angel beats too, but that's quite recent so it doesn't have the same "old school" vibe. They can make something absolutely amazing without filling it with porn. They use lewd situations for more than fanservice. And this VN is their newest one, after 8 years. It's a real treat, not a nukige xD

Looks like i'm waiting for the reflection blue edition to get released in english before diving into this one. Need to mentally prepare myself since I went into Little Busters blind and was an emotional wreck. Rewrite was fun as heck and also was an amazing read - would highly recommend. After all the things I've jerked to I think it's time for me to do a little bit of soul cleansing...

They've done h-scenes before in their older VNs, such as Kanon, but honestly Key wasn't that great with them. I think they're better leaving h-scenes out.

to my knowledge they once experimented with making the Nagisa sex scene in clannad, but didn't put it in, and then made some scenes for Little Busters, and made them a completely separate vn. Did they make anything else?

Air and Tomoyo After also had some. I can't think of any others at the moment.
