Well, duh - stuff like this mainly sells because it's marketed to teens. And to refer to my earlier point about the 13-year olds: teens love this sort of thing because this kind of immersive romance + ecchi stuff is the best thing they can get as long as they don't have access to anything with actual adult content.
I agree with your comment about teens, but I think there is another audience of adult people who want the story but are turned off by ratings of actual adult content.
Sometimes the writing is good enough that VNs like these attract a good number of adult fans as well - and Key certainly does have a good track record when it comes to that. But still; sex sells, and that's ultimately one of the main selling points of games like this.
Of course sex sells, that's why everything in modern society is being sexualized. Its the easiest way to grab eyeballs. But you can't be too explicit about this stuff, people get turned off if its too direct. The west is not used to VN's either, its a new market. Then again, I doubt the japanese care about western market.
Reading a fanmade doujin just isn't the same, though. It breaks the immersion of the game.
Depends on the doujin in question. Some doujins directly incorporate story, or link themselves to it.
That's just nonsense - anyone who would sincerely complain about actual adult content is also going to complain about any game that lays on the ecchi as thick as this.
Nope. I have seen so many posts from people who complain about sex as if its inclusion tarnishes the game. And in some cases, these are legit complains - but the solution is not removing the H (which is just lost content) but adding some context for the H. Go outside of these forums, and no one complains about H scenes, because there just aren't many western people who play the kind of VN's you and I are used to.
I mean, let's get real here - content like some of the scenes in the previews is worksafe in name only. It's clearly intended to be sexual and titillating, and it's really not something that you'd want to get caught with by your boss or your mother. And in fact, if you're just playing VNs like this for the story, then too much of this only technically worksafe stuff can get grating pretty quickly.
True. I agree. But see my point about moralizing, and you will see that the issue is more than just this.
I'm not trying to shame anyone. I'll admit that I'm complaining for a bit, but that's mainly about the weird fact that there's games that are technically worksafe but sometimes still feel like you're playing porn anyway.
I wasn't talking about you. I was addressing a common behaviour called catharsis. You have a legitimate point, but some people just want to put themselves on a higher pedestal to feel better about themselves.
Its easy to write fanservice too, so the writers win as well.
