Writing scene 30. Again.

It's done. Or almost. There are still a couple of red lines in my scripts, meaning I need to rework these lines but it's essentially done. I rewrote all the dialogue and changed both the introduction and the conclusion of the scene. The action was already good, but I tweaked it some more. The overall volume of content did grow a bit, especially with that new conclusion, but that allows for a smooth transition into the next scenes and to put it simply: it now feels good, like a natural development.

The scene is now 4880 words long which is slightly more than what expected but nothing crazy. I should be able to pose the scene in about 175 shots, maybe a bit more as it's an "action" scene. I'll know for sure Monday morning when I'll cut the scene and prepare it for the posing.

I'm not sure I will pose it immediately, however. I'm considering writing scenes 31 and 32 right away and posing everything once the whole script is ready. Writing on scene 30 has been much easier than the previous weeks, and I finally managed to get it right, I'd like to keep that momentum going. I'll see about that next week.

If I switch to posing, I will have to start with preparing the sets. As I'm going to update my version of Daz, I will have to rework the lights. I'll have to do it with every set in the game. I'll rework them as I'll need them.


The quick sum up :

  • Day 6 Part 6 will contain 3 new scenes: scenes 30, 31, and 32.
  • Day 6 Part 6 will contain 1 reworked scene: Day 2, scene 3.
  • 4880 words of new content so far.
  • I'm currently writing scene 30.

So he produced 0 renders and 4880 words since the last update and needs new lighting for everything when he finally starts to render ... whenever i see one of his devlogs, things somehow feel even worse than before regarding the development

So, I finally replayed the game after more than 1 year and a half (when 0.6.3 came out).

0.6.3 was a fairly short update that spanned day 6 from the moment they enter the restaurant at lunch (if I remember well) till late afternoon where MC & the girls have fun at the pool.

So in july 2023 (this is what my save files tell me) I left MC and the 3 girls enjoying the pool in the late afternoon, and this is what I got after 1 year and a half:

a few minutes of gameplay where MC, Cassie and Kelly play poker, then MC and Cassie dance for a couple of minutes, then they hear police sirens and then they talk with Cassie's bodyguards and the cop.

Please DON'T tell me I'm supposed to play the routes where MC is a retarded douchebag wanker and the girls tell him off as well.

Either the dev doesn't work very smart or he spends 1 min per day to work on this game.

Scene 30.

I cut the scene and prepared it for posing. I planned 149 shots to illustrate the almost 5000k words of the scene. I also rewrote a couple of passages that felt slightly off while I prepared the scene. Nothing out of the ordinary. My cut seems pertinent, but 149 shots, for 5000 words feels a bit short. Maybe I'll add a couple more shots in the slower moments if I feel it's needed. We'll see.

I hesitated to switch to scene 31 and keep on writing but finally went for the set work and the posing.

Ghost lights.

As I mentioned in my previous dev update, I'm upgrading my software, and that has some consequences. There are many ways to light a scene. Ghost lights are one of these and that's what I use almost exclusively. And that specific tool has drastically changed. They're still there, and they still work... but their setup and behavior itself has changed.

Upgrading the sets to these new ghost lights has been difficult, to say the least. The main issue was that I struggled to get the results I wanted. I spent most of the week trying to reproduce the light I had with the previous version of Daz and failed. So... I have to change the way I light my scenes. My focus has always been to simulate a "natural" light. I feel like this won't be possible anymore.

I finally managed to reach an acceptable configuration, however, and started posing the scene. I've barely scratched it so far with only three shots posed today.

That new version of Daz, however, really seems faster on the loading front. And that is a tremendous quality of life improvement.

Posing.

It's slowly progressing. So far, no real issues. Some light artifacts and aberrations on a couple of previews but they are very limited and I hope they will disappear during the rendering, or at least be easy to post-process out. Aside from that, I didn't encounter any major difficulties so far. Some shots are very time-consuming, and some others are very easy to pose, just as expected. I only posed 30 shots, however, because I invested some dev time into something else...

Animation.

Ok, don't get your hopes too high. It's not done yet. Animations are a "feature" that is very often requested and it's probably also a major selling point for some players out there. So far, I managed to do without and focus on the stills, but I have to admit that there is value in animations and that Summer Scent is lacking in that department. So I'm looking into it, with the objective to add one, or two, maybe three animations to Day 6 part 6.

Nothing is certain. I'd rather release some good stills than a crappy animation, and if I can't produce anything decent enough, I will release without.

But I'm looking into it, and I have two options.

First, I can try animating with Daz. It's a tool I know and the one I use for the stills. Making decent animations with Daz will be pretty difficult because the tool itself is bad when it comes to animating, but they should have the same look and feel as the rest of the shots, and that is a major advantage.

Second, I can try working with Blender. I would have to learn that new tool, but it's immensely better than Daz when it comes to animations, and the time I would invest in learning and practicing it could be very useful later. The issue however is that I cannot guarantee that the result will look like my other renders and the result could be jarring. I give a lot of importance to coherence and consistency, so this is a huge issue for me. Some other creators are working like that and manage to produce some blender animations that mix very well among Iray renders. It is possible. But will I be able to do it myself?

I spent some time testing several things with Blender in mind. So far my results are laughable, but there is a lot of room for improvement. So there is hope.

I think I'll take one more week of reflection on that matter and then make a decision.

I would greatly appreciate some feedback on this. If you have any opinions or insight in that matter, I'd gladly hear it.
