DC told me that they were going to completely rewrite the game to stick more to current events (IA, transgender, the war in Ukraine). In short, he is starting everything from scratch next month and under gimp and krita (he will also have to relearn everything because he don't know gimp and krita). If this is true. It would not suprise me. A lot of devs do rewrites for various reasons. But this resets all the work to 0. So meaning everybody who paid him all these years did it for nothing.
Also a rewrite for this game means it will never get finished. But knowing people a lot of them will still send there pay checks to Mr Cookie.

Per F95 rules, games that haven't had an update after 18 months receive the "Abandoned" tag regardless of their development status or dev communication. Summertime Saga is still being worked on but the tag will remain until the next actual update, currently projected for sometime around the end of the month.
