Old saves don't work and won't work for quite some time. But they did provide a full save when 0.17.5 dropped, so one could start the new content right away and had everything else done. Of course nobody knows if they'll do the same for 0.18. but there's certainly a chance.
Else it has always been true that you never really had to replay that much anyway. Most new stories started from day one and apart from some stats grinds you didn't really have to touch any old content.
