Rule of thumb. There is a direct correlation between the quality of a game and the amount of people complaining about the development speed (and or the obligatory knee jerk comments about milking).
Not even true, there are games like ripples for example which are very high quality but with slow development time and you don't have pages and pages of people calling the dev a milker.

I kinda agree -- I was on my way out and I only mentioned the hassle of refactoring into a spiderweb of code.

You bring up a good with the trades made -- and DCs not completely affected by industry norms, which is why he chose the latter -- longer, but better way. The norm, I mention is that rewriting from scratch (or similarly porting systems into a newer/updated framework) is not an option for companies who have their apps live or have users already relying on them.

Turning off a service for 3 months just for a rewrite will generally piss off customers and have them leave for an alternative. (This from personal experience, is why a company I worked for refused upgrading their systems from JS ES4 to ES7+ so we could use some of the QoL syntax in newer versions)

Since DC is in a unique situation in that SS is not a live service -- he still has a consumer base to think about.

The reason Debbie is such a meme at this point is that she was the first piece of content in 2016 -- and she has been reworked several times prior to the "tech-update" and now she is being redone yet again.

The reason why I don't think is valuable use of time to rewrite and start from the beginning like this -- using Debbie as an example -- is that she had a few janky animations (bed scene, shower scene) pre tech update. Her animations were "done", her story was "done" and in many ways -- none of her code should affect how any other girl functioned.

So lets say they started using a new rigging system for the newer girls (pre-tech update) that new method used a different framework than how old Debbie was being animated. However using that new method would not affect Debbie, and Debbie's code did not affect Roxy or Consuela. Instead of moving forward -- they went back to Debbie and Jenny to set them up for the new framework. This eventually let them delete the old code since everything would be running on the new framework.

I think this is the best practice -- but it has led to the Debbie meme. And this was all pre-tech update stuff. To do that again starts feeling disingenuous. How they handled updating Debbie the first time around where Debbie's garbage code was eventually* replaced with the newer framework utilized by newer content -- is what I meant about the value of refactoring. These new updates utilizing whatever new framework and starting from scratch is suspicious. I mean, I do see the difference. I do appreciate the differences. There are minor rewrites even in the new updates that are quite noticeable.

I still commend them for all of that. But its still suspicious what actually has been achieved in the last 2-3 years. There was 2 years of silence, of no updates, and you could assume they did what you alluded to by taking off "3 months" to start from scratch and move forward after -- because it was suppose to be faster. But now after 2+ years for the framework rewrite (and then seeing a sliver of code from pre-tech compared to a recent build -- with nothing notably too different) and lastly the idea of "suppose to be faster" -- yet these Debbie updates have taken 6 months -- continues to raise further and further suspicions.

I don't think my point was ever really about refactoring or rewriting code from scratch, tbh, I think I got triggered when what people say sounds like they are blindly defending DC. And a terrible code base is not a good enough excuse for what has happened in the last 3 years. And I just wanted to qualify that, hopefully.
I'm not close enough to the game to dispute any of what you have said regarding Summertime Saga.

I will say that I feel more positive about the development after Count Morado gave me some background on the project. It does not make me a fan of their development process or excited about new updates, but at least it gives me an understanding on the reason for doing it. People will stop complaining when the Tech update is caught up with the current story. The Jury is out on when that will happen. (My guess is that it will still be a while)

I do want to counter one of your points:
You bring up a good with the trades made -- and DCs not completely affected by industry norms, which is why he chose the latter -- longer, but better way. The norm, I mention is that rewriting from scratch (or similarly porting systems into a newer/updated framework) is not an option for companies who have their apps live or have users already relying on them.
This happens all the time though: It's brutal and unpleasant, but it happens every 5-10 years. (Especially if your system runs on Windows)

I just went through that process twice in the last year. Our software was completely re-written over the last 2 years, while keeping the old software on life support. So you focus 80% of your time on the new software and do the bare minimum on the current system. You plan your migrations and rollback plans. And then one day, you switch over.... You have chaos and hotfixes and crazy overtime for about a month and then things start to settle down.

We did it for the company I work for as well as one of our customer interfaces when they changed their SAP version.

Sorry...that was off topic....

Incest Patch for the latest update (WIP 5791) and the Pre-Tech Version (0.20.16)

This is a patch that reverts back the relationship of the characters to how it was before the change in Patreon policy.

Why use this patch?
Much more comprehensive list of changes to dialogue. I checked almost every line of dialogue and made sure it flowed correctly. This is not just a simple name change for the characters, but whole blocks of lines are back to their 14.5 version of the game (the last version that has incest). New dialogue written for this tech update also were taken into consideration since DarkCookie is adding new story beats. I'll try to make the dialogue conform to their familial relationship as much as possible. I also modified the art asset to fit the new widescreen resolution of the game, and will continue doing so as needed.

What about other incest patches out there?
outdated and shouldn't be used. Lots of text bugs and not made for the latest pre-tech version.

is not compatible with my patch. It hasn't been updated in a while and all the changes that patch offers is also included in my patch.

Relation Tweaker Mod is not compatible with my patch. However, I recommend using this one instead if you want to customize the relationship between characters. This patch allows step relations or mixed step/incest relations. It works with the new tech update only.

Relation Tweaker Lewd+ is standalone and should work with any incest patch/mod. It works with the new tech update only.

Naughty Tribute Mod is not an incest patch, but a mod for the pre-tech version (0.20.16). There are some compatibility issues I haven't looked into yet. Someone in this thread uploaded a fix here, and while I haven’t personally tested it, you’re welcome to give it a try.

Installation:
Pick only one version of the mod. Use the appropriate patch for the version of the game you're using. for more info.
- For the Pre-Tech version (0.20.16,) download Pre-Tech 0.20.16.zip
- For the Tech version (WIP 5791), download WIP 5791.zip

Unzip and place the ipatch file inside Summertime Saga's game folder.

This patch is inspired and modified from the previous uploads that came before it. Special thanks to Scarlet Ashbringer, Sothyr and Xaverion for their previous work on a patch. And to raschi for helping me with some questions on how to develop this patch!

Will this be updated?

This game is a recent discovery for me and from what I understand from the current versions of the game, is it a remake? Can anyone help? I just really liked the game but I can't find the older versions that had a lot of content. I would be very grateful.

Some years ago, the developers decided to remake the code of the game from the scratch.
Version 0.20.16 (aka pre-Tech Update) is the last one before they did it.
Newer versions still have only a fraction of the content of that version.
The older version is available for download in the original post, inside a spoilers tag.

21 saves. Post rework. Inactive with red cross over them.
Then you're doing something wrong.
All v21.0.0 saves are compatible with wip.6011. exception might be saves in wip.4468 and v5003 because those had old Debbie route and art.
If they are v21 saves, you never moved them?
Were they saves using a modded or patched v21 and now using no mod or patch... Or using different mod or patch?

you're just now starting to doubt him? It doesn't take this long to make a game that is essentially a slideshow with menus. especially when you have an insane amount of funding to make it happen like he does. If he finishes the game he'll have to come up with new ideas and actually start working again like he did before the game blew up, instead of drip feeding the bare minimum to keep his naive supporters coming back. The more money coming in it conveniently gets harder and harder to make the game.
I've never thought DC was innocent, I just reckoned that he's lazy, inept and lacked respect for the people providing him the comfortable life he has (patrons) along with generally just having a terrible work ethic. Which was bad enough for me already.

Overhauling the whole game is one thing, I dont know much about game development or what's going on behind the scenes, so I didn't take much of a position except for mild criticism and calling out people who were making wild conclusions with little to no info. DC acting in bad faith has always been a possibility for me, but I don't make accusations based on an under-informed hunch.

But at this point, where Debbie's update is taking at least half a year to be feature complete.. There's just no way to rationalize so little content taking so long. So I think that any and all criticism, whether valid or not, is deserved.

everyone is entitled to their money and how they spend it, if they want to, people supporting the development on patreon can cancel the subscription anytime...

But that doesn't mean the dev(s) can't make efforts toward delivering a finished product first, possibly implementing add-ons, dlcs whatever later and keeping a remake/remaster project separate from the original vision

while i do agree for the most part, remaking/remastering a project halfway through can sometimes be necessary. small mistakes can soon accumulate into something unmanagable (believe me, i'd know) and that seems to have been what has happened here. ironically, because of this, remaking the game from scratch will likely save time in the long run. THAT BEING SAID, this development is still painfully slow, it would have been nice for the devs to keep a small skeleton crew working on the "old" build of the game so that there can actually be some more "new" content rather than just reworked content at most, though i dont have enough insight into the inner workings of the dev team to know if that is even feasably (probably isnt).
