They use their own power to fuel it, I think it would be very cost effective to get that sure fire kill. But Syla was just using it as a stall, she didn't have access to anyone stronger. From a writing perspective that moment was a way of showcasing just how strong Indra is by putting him against established characters/True, but Nicolette even says that they burn through their power very quickly when they copy someone stronger than themselves. Even if Syla is in the dream world, I can't imagine copying someone stronger like Val (Probably) or Indra would be cost efficient. That's why (At least it is implied) that she was using the powers of those she had already defeated. While less powerful than herself, they would likely be significantly more cost efficient and would make her more versatile than if she didn't risk those memories. That still doesn't mean that they are as capable with those powers as the original user was when they fought, or as strong as they would become after they fought. After all, like it or not they are only memories of a fight already fought, not the copying of a power directly.
We don't know the details on skill, this is all just guess work, what we do know is that Nyx was worried about fighting a much weaker monster because she was aware of how dangerous it was, so what we do know is they can use memories to punch far above their weight.
I think you've taken the line about memory doing weak direct damage too literally as in they can't ever be good at it, they can't shoot out laser beams directly, but they can indirectly.
