I think I understand the difference between Ella's shapeshifting and the MC's shapeshifting. Ella's shapeshifting is Body focused, in that she directly changes her molecular structure, whereas the MC's shapeshifting is Memory based, in that we can change based off of our memories of what we want to transform into. That's why Ella has trouble creating venom or poison, anything she would make would break down without her power to support it because it is like making a clone, whereas for us, it is a natural biological action caused by our changed cellular structure, meaning it doesn't need our support to keep it sticking around for longer. It also explains why Ella has no trouble changing her nails or anything else into steel, as it's just a molecular change, whereas the MC finds it difficult to read the memory of inanimate objects until he reaches level 2 and specifically needs Ella's memories of doing it to make the change happen. It also explains Ella's invulnerable state, she's not resisting an attack necessarily, she's stopping all changes to her bodies exact molecular structure at the time she activates the state.
Why is this important? Simply because I think this is the real reason that Ella doesn't understand how powerful Memory is compared to Body. Body would be best considered as the perfect spear, whereas Memory would be the perfect shield. You can see the difference in how Syla fights compared to Ella, whenever Ella is out ranged, she tends to act more generally protective of her total mass, compared to how Syla can just ignore any attack regardless of how fatal it should be. (At least in the mental world.) Additionally, Syla has the ability to use the forms of enemies she has defeated, like her daughters can use their powers to imitate a powerful individual, though based on Syla's fight with Indra, if they are beaten then she cannot use them anymore. Conversely, Ella's attacks are almost always extremely effective in any fight she's in, while Syla tends to struggle to do any lasting physical damage most of the time.
