Cole has zero regard for human life, we have no idea how many people Cole has killed, but judging by the fact that he periodicaly threatened and abused his own surogate brothers and sisters and he tried to kill Charlie over nothing shows his kill count is likely far above Jared's.
You're missing the point here.
Cole has deviated from the standard psychological development as a means of coping and it's obvious.
And
power amplifies the character. It makes temptation that much greater and every sacrifice that much harder.
It's easy to become a villain when you're powerful. Easier still if you simply mirror the callousness you received back to the world.
But Jared was a dangerous asshole when he was still human. When his antics could get him shot and stabbed by someone who had a little less countenance. And he's all of that
and cowardly to boot when faced with someone who is obviously stronger.
Cole at least sees his own world view through to the end. Jared will try to hide from the consequences of his actions whenever possible.
If I scale Cole and Jared back to human, Cole will beat you to a pulp for looking at you the wrong way.
Jared will torture you on principle as long as he can get away with it.
And yes, I can still call Cole's brutality pathetically lashing out at the world because that's what he's doing.
He is pathetic. A lot like Andrew Detmer from Chronicle, but instead of a sick mom, an abusive father and bullies at school, he gets tortured in a heat chamber.
Additionally, as much as the perspective makes it not matter in that moment, Cole is trying to be his twisted version of kind when he sees what the twins are going through, by putting them out of their misery.
Jared's tendency to torture is a deliberate extension of suffering that is a very deliberate kind of evil. It's the kind of entitlement that leads him to try and kill Laurie because it's going to hurt us and the people around us while hiding behind Cole. Just as callous, but the intent was
arguably more twisted than mere murder.
Additionally that character trait leads him to
avoid justice for his deeds for even the things he did as a human by looking for help from someone he fucked over in the first place.
I fully believe that, if left alone and on their trajectories, Jared's actions would end up creating more Coles than Cole's.
