I think in the original SAO, players were forced to use their real appearance and stats when they were locked in the game, but they could still grow stronger through leveling. I'm not sure how it worked in the follow-up games though.

If we dig deeper, we know that Asuna has blocked some of her memories, but we don't know which part or how. How much time has been lost?
