Sounds like you are not far into the game, story wise. Exit the starting village to the west. Walk towards the forest. Inside the forest talk to the girl, who will give you an axe/saw if you retrieve something from an underground cave. The cave can be found by walking east inside the forest and when you get blocked by two rows of plants, go south where the entrence is to the cave.
Retrieve, go back to her, get saw, chop chop
